Biologists pick a vigorous strand for cultivation. They look at those survivors that are tough. They make sure it is the right species.

Botanists pick those with nice leaves and better flower color and scent.

Are there frontier-botanists selecting from these wild individuals for commercial-value at this time? I would think he or she would have great potential for fame and wealth :-)

Menglun is a place in Yunnan with a famous Tropical Botanical Garden.

How do you know the place?

My friend did not give detail. She went to see wild trees in undisclosed locations. But some of the wild magnolias appeared to have been vandalized, some harmed seriously. Gee.

Most of the pictures published at www.botanypictures.com were made there. And I'm keen on tropical flora of SE Asia, among others ;).

Sad to here about the fate of those precious magnolias.

I find it interesting that they call themselves "Green Gem on the Crown of the Kingdom of Plants", when I've always heard that the Kunming Institute of Botany/Botanical Gardens was such. Actually it was often described as "heaven on earth" or the "garden of eden". I wish I would of visited Menglun also to compare the two!

Also, snasx how were the Magnolias vandalized? Was it damage caused by people cutting off branches to collect flowers or stripping bark for medicinal uses? This is common practice with Magnolias native to Mexico and Central America and SE Asia. It's almost impossible to find mature undamaged Magnolia trees in much of these areas.

Have you been to Kunming before?

Kunming, the capital of Yunnan, is nick-named "Spring City". Her weather is mild throughout the year. My friend went there last winter. It was hard for her to believe such an inland city was swamped by scarlet-beaked seagulls.

As for the vandalism, it appeared some malicious kids (or bears) removed the flowers, kicked broken some trunks and torn off some branches. So it did not look like a premeditated crime, although, hard and dark-colored, the wood of M Grandis is considered precious and is traditionally sought after.

Yes, I've been to Kunming before and the botanical gardens there are outstanding. The weather there reminds me a bit of Mexico City without the pollution, where it never gets real hot and it never gets real cool, just in the middle all year long. The Hangzhou botanic gardens are also very nice, but the climate is more seasonal.

We have seagulls here in Kansas also(about 440 miles from the nearest ocean at it's closest point, which is the Gulf of Mexico). They love to hang out around the dump though. A large number show at large local lakes also and a few hang around fast food joints looking for scraps. Then there's the large annual migration of Franklin's Gull to and from it's breeding grounds in the central prairies of Canada and it's winter home's of Argentina and Chile(some stay in the Caribbean) which can last for a few weeks in Kansas. Sometimes they continually fly over, especially at night it seems, for hours and hours at a time.

Lol! I thought seagulls eat fish. Now I think they eat everything.

Wow! kman, you have traveled all over the world! I have never been to Yunnan. I always want to see Amazon, Papua New Guinea, the Southern side of the Himalayans, the Northeast rainforest of Australia, and tropical Africa  Congo, etc. I bet you have visited them all.
