Engine life expectancy

I recently read various posts on this forum regarding EPA, non-adjustable carburetors, and the "life expectancy" of riding lawnmowers/garden tractors.

I just dug out the engine paperwork for the Tecumseh OHV130 engine fitted to my 2001Yard Machine. I read that the non-adjustable carbs have been around CA since 1995, two years earlier than the rest of the country. I also found out the D.O.M sticker has a letter code for, as they put it, the "useful life period of your engine". There are only three codes: C for 250 hours (and thatÂs the rating for the Tecumseh OHV130), which they call "moderate life period", B is 500 hours, and A is 1000 hours. I am not sure what they mean by "useful life period" Â does this imply that typically, repair costs will outweigh residual value after that many hours? I assume the rating is so that the emission control components will last at least as long as the engine.

I am posting this as there might be others who, like myself, did not know the DOM sticker has the "useful life period" details for the engine fitted to their tractors.
