Buck Roses keep getting stronger

Several years ago I purchased Quietness and Folk Singer Buck Rosed. Both were planted with only minimal soil prep and they have been given little attention since. Both have been treated like I do my Knockout roses.

The first year they grew a little, the sencond year a little more and this year they look great. This is very different from my experience with most rosed. Normally they either take off with in the first year or they decline over several years. My Bucks Roses seem to get stronger every year. Has anyone had this experience?

Others with more knowledge will probably jump in here, but I think what you describe is the norm, David. Roses begin to hit their stride in the third year. Enjoy your beautiful Bucks!

Some Bucks get stronger, others weaker. Quietness is good. If it had a stronger fragrance it would be the perfect rose. Many Bucks have declined and died on me. Distant Drums and Silver Shadows have been hanging on at 1 foot tall for several years. Prairie Sunrise survived for a few years and then suddenly died. Earthsong and Griff's Red are taking a while to bounce back. Prairie Star died the first winter. Prairie Breeze looks like a good one. Honeysweet has survived for several years. Many Bucks from Sam Kedem died the first winter including Country Song and Rural Rhythm (both use Austin The Yeoman). Yolande d' Aragon (an OGR) fits the 3 year pattern.

Prairie Harvest and Winter Sunset are solid performers in my MN zone 4a garden. If you can take another pink, Aunt Honey is very dependable as is Earth Song. Distant Drums and April Moon are very nice, but waste away in my climate. Winter deals them a tough blow and they do not have the vigor to restore themselves. Distant Drums is so unique that I will continue to buy one every other year or grow it as an annual if need be. If it were not for the PM problem, Folksinger would be in serious contention for my favorite rose. If PM is not a problem in your climate or if you are willing to spray, Folksinger is worthy of consideration. Regards, Charles

Iam going to get winter sunset from the local nursery.Prairie harvest is going to be on my order for next spring.Thanks kathy and kaye for recommendations.Chefcdp and andduchesse_nalabama thanks for sharing your opinions. mgleason Iam leaving the lavender/mauve coloured roses out for now because 10 out of my 50-60 roses are lavender coloured.Besides Iam hearing contradictory statements about the fragrance of Blue skies.Predfern I definitely don't need a winmpy grower.I already have intrigue which has two canes after three years.Thanks for sharing your experience. Thanks for posting the nice picture. mark_ro Iam not considering earthsong becuase I already have country dancer in same color range.I have noticed that fellow GW members who grow it seems to like it a lot.I might end up getting it one of these days. My Earthsong (purchased from Sam Kedem) has survived for several years although a few years ago it didn't come back until almost July. I thought it had died. No fragrance that I can detect. I also have Prairie Breeze. Again no fragrance but huge blooms and very hardy. Quietness has nice bloom form and occasionally I can detect a little fragrance. I also have Griff's Red which is very hardy and has a little fragrance. Repeat not as good as the others. Honeysweet is my favorite with lots of blooms but still not much fragrance. September Song is not very impressive so far and Enchanted Autumn will probably not make it through another winter. Silver Shadows has been barely hanging on for several years (another Same Kedem along with Honeysweet) but it is very fragrant. Queen Bee and Distant Drums were not hardy here. For some reason blackspot is not too bad here and I don't spray so I can't comment on disease resistance. Many of my Austins do not get much blackspot either.

One that is new for me this year is Golden Unicorn. Earlier this year I reported on this forum my disappointment in this one....the bush was scraggly and got a terrible case of BS. The flowers were extremely ho-hum (I had thought it would be more of a bright apricot color) and they looked good for about 5 minutes before they blew away. I had actually relegated it to the back of my pot ghetto.

What's that old thing about "giving peace....er, I mean ROSES a chance?"

I noticed several weeks ago that the bush was looking very good (still in it's pot). The foliate is very lush and the plant is nice and rounded. (I did have to start spraying a bunch of my roses due to major BS so that is probably part of it) But the blooms started looking really good too! They are a really delicate shade of pale apricot with the buds being darker - very attractive! If you like subtle and delicate color, this is one for you.

Here is a picture which does not do justice - the color is not as pronounced in the photo. It looks a bit paler than it is in actual life.

On the other hand, Blue Skies has been a disappointment. Scraggly growth (obviously a sin in my garden!) and BS prone (although it, too looks better since being sprayed). The flowers are ok. My daughters love the HT shape and the strange color!

Although an oldie but goodie, Carefree Beauty remains one of my favorite roses in my entire garden for it's health (NO spraying for that one!), vigor (very full and lush growth) and those masses of huge pink blooms with the yellow centers! My spring display was incredible and it is now beginning a second show. I would love a hedge of this one! Here it is in early April, just starting to display:

Own root roses are perennials, and the old adage applies..
the first year they sleep
the second year they creep
the third year they leap
there's always an exception, but generally they need to put down good roots to make a strong plant, and 3 years is about the norm for an own root to mature. Donna
