little bitty P. polymorpha

I ordered a Persicaria polymorpha from Brent & Becky's and it came and it's so wee. (I'm not complaining, to be totally clear, I paid the same for it as I would have paid for a quart size plant at my local nursery and it's about that size of plant ... just didn't think it through beforehand.)

Anyway, can I expect this dinky little thing with two eyes on it to do much at all this year? If I want more of a show would I be better off seeing if the nursery can order me in a gallon size plant?

Plant what you've got, and next year--watch out!! P. polymorpha is a great plant, and a fast growing one. And give it at least 12 feet diameter.

12 ... feet ... diameter?! Are you sure you don't mean circumference?

I thought I gave the thing plenty of room, a 5' circle, but nowhere I read about it said it was any bigger than 5' across! Holy carp!

gee lacey, how come? don't you want the continued structure (with or without bloom)? i wouldn't think of cutting mine to the ground , and I'm 'born to whack'!! maybe yours are covered by JBs? btw, everyone, when do you divide yours? just after growth has begun in spring? how late have you been successful dividing it? i want to do this next yr. best, mindy

Thank you rouge and gardenho. It is culvers root. I love that plant, I have the lavender, pink and white which must be virginicum as it seeds around quite a bit, usually in a pathway or in the center of another perennial. The obelisk was a Mother’s Day present from my SO. It is in that spot on a temporary basis until I move some tired iris in another spot (constantly moving things it seems). Now there are 2 pots of Heavenly Blue morning glory trying to fight their way out of the shade of the persicaria. Once the obelisk is in its’ permanent home, there is a Perle d’azur and a Jackmanii clematis waiting for planting. i forgot to add another benefit of the eventual size of the P. polymorpha:: it is a beacon in the night, especially on a moonlit night...

5' is enough room for mine. I have a few - in conditions varying from full sun to under white pines. In full sun they are tall and stiffly upright. They get laxer and form a more open, wider clump in varying degrees of shade. In shadier conditions the stems sometimes get top heavy with bloom and fall over. But they are great plants in every location.

Mine is 12 feet diameter--in full sun. A massive plant. It looks like a huge shrub.

i'm guessing laceyvail's southern location affects his/her plant's size. and YOU are in the PNW where all plants are twice the size of their sisters in new england.I've had my clump 3 years and it is huge and happy in a moist area w/ diameter of 4'.It has months of flower and seed interest. Nice to grow small flowered clematis through it and tall grasses near it.
