briggs turns over won't fire

I have a Briggs 16hp. Used to start now just cranks without firing. I have new starter motor and it turns over fine just no fire plugs look good, no fuel issues

What's it on?

IF a tractor, your seat switch may be the cu;prit.

Disconnect the kill wire to the coil. IF it then runs, the kill wire circuit is grounded.

I too would hear clunks coming from the carb area on my 20hp Scotts (Briggs Intek motor) . Turns out the carb has some type of Solenoid on it ... if you get a close look at the bottom of the carb - you will see a wire going to it... What happened to the good ol simpler days? i suppose its there to stop the engine from flooding when its not running ? long story short - it was my solenoid which died on me ... Did you try jumping across the Solenoid - or the starter motor? its not clear to me what "leads" your speaking of (sorry). Another test for you... Put the key into a run position / put the choke on (if you need it to start your motor) , and then bypass your solenoid. If you get your motor running - your probably looking at defective solenoid... thats what I ended up doing before i swapped mine out for a new one. you said "darn thing quit running" I assume it has gas ... If you can spin the motor but can NOT get the motor started with the ignition in the run position - you might want to test if your getting spark at the plugs. good luck

Well mich, I should have gone further down the list before I responded to your post in the other thread. As a preliminary suggestion on your problem, you need to at least remove the spark plug from the engine and empty any oil or water out (if you can) and then fill the cylinder (through the spark plug hole) with some kerosene, diesel fuel, mineral spirits, auto trans fluid, Marvel Mystery Oil or any other type of thin oil or solvent (except don't use any highly flammable stuff like gasoline or lacquer thinner). DO NOT put the plug back in. Now, let it sit for a day or 2 and then see if the engine will turn, leave spark plug out until you get the engine freed up (if you can get it to turn).

"9. All safety mechanisms have been tested and/or bypassed. " Exactly HOW did you bypass the seat switch? That may be the root of your problem. Best way to make sure any safety switches are out of the circuit is to disconnect the kill wire at the magneto. Is the carb fuel solenoid energizing? Obviously, it is "turning over" if it "will run for a couple of seconds". You really mean to say (I think) "It will not start and stay running". Possibility #1: If the engine has not used for a while (sitting in storage) the carburetor jets may have become clogged by the varnish that forms when gasoline is allowed to go stale and evaporate over time. Possibility # 2: The carburetor float valve is stuck to it's valve seat and will not allow fuel to enter the carburetor (also due to varnish). Possibilty # 3: If the carburetor has a "Fuel cutoff solenoid", the solenoid plunger valve has become stuck (varnish) and cannot open to allow fuel to the main jet. Possibility # 4: If the machine uses a fuel pump to move fuel to the carb (used if fuel tank is lower than carb....and that covers a lot of machines), the fuel pump may have gone bad during the storage period. Possibilty # 5: Does the machine have a fuel cutoff valve that you have not opened?

Take off the spark plug wire-hold end of it, stick other hand on engine, have somebody crank the engine, using the ignition key switch (Normal way of starting). If you get a mighty shock----then there is something else wrong with it!
At least you'll know that ain't the problem!
Next, check flywheel key. It might be sheared off, making the engine out of time! (A mechanical term--not a clock setting!) Ususally you have to remove the flywheel to check it. If you know the procedure of how to do it, do it. If not, seek professional help, because if you aren't hep to the proper way to remove it, you'll probably mess something up, which will call for more repairs and parts!

It might be helpful to know WHAT B&S 16 hp engine you are talking about since there are at least 4 different ones I can think of just now, model number.
