Crape Myrtle success this far North?

I received a small Crape Myrtle seedling as a "freebie" for joining Arbor Day about 2 years ago. It was about 6" tall when I planted it and it is about 2' now and seems to be doing well. I didn't know they could be planted so far North (I live in SW Michigan)and was surprised it was listed for Zone 6. Can they become nice sized trees with lots of flowers or will thus be more of a shrub with limited potential due to our climate? I always think of them as a southern species and was surprised it was listed for this zone. I have never seen a mature specimen here in Michigan (unfortunately I don't know the cultivar). Thanks for any help.
