Dead/Sick Corkscrew Willow

My willow tree looks dead, it was sparse looking last year, and I see almost no growth this year. So I think it is done for. Can anyone help me identify what it is? It had little golf ball sized nodules all over the main trunk (mostly out of the picture), and a brownish looking color elsewhere.

Regardless, I think it is coming down, what should I do with the wood, does willow work for firewood (I wood of course season it), or will I just get creosote in the chimney? I am afraid to mulch it if it died of infection like crown gall, I don't want to spread it to any other trees.

Just to add, it was girdled by some landscaping fabric from whoever planted it. The fabric had cut in at least an inch deep all the way around the tree. I guess they weren't planning on it getting this large and didn't cut the fabric to allow for expansion. I wouldn't think that this would kill a tree like this, as it seems to conform to whatever it grows around, like the fence. I would estimate the age of the tree to be around 15 or 20 years.

Willow are poor adapters to damage...looks like an old injury that has continued to decay. either in the root zone, or in the main stem itself. Not much you can do. This will eventually require the tree to be removed. Here is a link that might be useful: My Plant info site

I live in the Chippewa Valley area. I bought three of them four years ago at a local garden center. A buck killed the first one with his antlers. He also rubbed his antlers on the second but it looked like it was going to survive. The next year over half of the tree was dead. The third tree was beautiful last summer, but this year there are no leaves on it. We did go through a drought but I am sure my husband watered it well. We have not cut it down yet, I suppose we are still hoping. I like the idea of just hanging them on the wall. Maybe I will have to get into stained glass! Thanks, Tory

Grows a bigger, heavier top that those other two (although I once measured a French pink here that as I recall had a trunk 11' around) so it might be more likely to go over for that reason. But you see big ones out in the open east of the mountains here, where they have continental conditions (USDA 4-6 or 7). Planting in a damp place might make toppling more likely as well. But as with planting of all trees and shrubs, the most critical factor could be making sure these don't go into your site with deformed (circling, knotted etc.) roots on which the trees will pivot over once the tops get heavy enough.
