Live oak update/ seedling question

I posted many months ago about trying to grow Quercus Virginiana in SW Pa. As many would have guessed it didn,t fare well. The trunk is alive but the branches are dead and brown when I scratched off some bark on the branches they,re brown and buds are nonexistent.Well, I,ve learned that I can,t grow it here. I have a question I,ve got a white oak seedling (1 ft tall) growing near a masonry wall as of today April 3rd it is leafing out already by the next few days the leaves will be all the way unfurled. If we get a frost will the tree bounce back with new leaves?I have never seen leafout in early April before now.Thanks for any replies, Poaky1

If the tree has it's leaves "burned" by a deep freeze the white oak will sprout new leaves from dormant "axillary" buds.

They may take a little bit, but they'll grow. I learned after we had a deep freeze one April when every tree/bush that had leafed out had some sort of damage.

do you mean a potted plant .... a recent transplant ....

or a rogue warrior ... a volunteer ...

if its self sown.. it will be much better able to cope... rather than something that has been recently transplanted.. or forced because of a warmed black pot ...

think of it this way .. if its a foot tall .. its probably already a 2 to 4 year old oak .... it can probably handle just about everything ma nature throws at it.. but for that wall which might be causing the problem .... the faster spring heating ...

but i would bet a buck it will be just fine ....

DO NOT TRIM, the leaves might be dead but the branches are not, they appear to be fine. The branches, including the leader will send out new leaves. Just plant in ground and watch during spring. If a tree big or small gets too little water or in your case probably overheated (because you watered) it will protect itself and lose its leaves kinda like it's fall. My guess is the soil and pot got too hot, and you might have even scorched it by watering it when it was so hot, instead of allowing the pot to cool down first. Just plant in ground in fall first, then wait till spring to see what branches leaf out, then if you like trim the ones that didn't. If you want, you could mist the branches that have brown leaves on them just to keep them moist till the first frost.

Hi Matthew, I also admire your trying to save a link to this cool oak tree and applaud your efforts. Firt of all, in most parts of the country, this is the worst time to try and move a tree. Normally it's done in early spring or the fall, however in this case you didnt have a chance to wait that long. Yes you will need a larger container for sure as oaks grow a large taptoot. A deeper pot is going to be better than a wide one for an oak. How long do you plan to leave the oak in the container? If you only plan to leave it in the container for a month or so, then you can use a good quality potting soil mix and add some perlite for drainage. If you plan to leave it in the container for more than a month then I suggest you build a much better soil using pine bark, turface and granite. I'll help you with building that soil if you wish. Just dont leave it in regular potting soil for more than a few weeks. Also, don't overwater it as it's easy to overwater a tree in regular garden soil or potting mix and cause root rot. August 3rd 2009. This seedling has exceptional characteristics and since I had no tape I guessed it to be 17 feet tall. My father is going to go measure it as I do not live close to it. You'll see the bark is normal red below and at all hte upper branches off of the main trunk there is a black blotch and the entire branches have curling/black tones/bark. The last photos show the very first year where the bark has had 2 years to age. It's really something. I think it has characteristics (I'll watch it for another five or ten years) to become cultivar material. Dax

From a previous post, I did dig the tulip tree seedling from a neighboring property, sadly it was nestled tightly between some roses and weeds and I wasn't able to get a good root mass. I tried my best, but it died quickly. On a brighter note, a neighbor had a redbud growing nicely and neatly near my property and I dug that little guy up and potted it on my porch. It is about 50 yards from my appilacian redbud, so it may be an offspring. I don't even care if it reverts to the genus, this is a tree I have been wanting to grow from seed for a couple years now but have been unsuccessful. Yay. P.s. I was wondering when everyone limbs up their seedlings? Just curious if you do it after 3-4 years, or if you wait for height, or something else.

Thanks for the replies, in response to Ken Adrian it,s a transplant (last fall) that,s in the ground. I,m suprised to hear that it is probably 2-4 years old, they grow that slow? I have a Beech that grows a ft approx a year and I thought it was slow. All my white oaks are under 3 ft, I,ll be waiting a long time before I get any shade from them I guess.I,m glad for my red oaks that are shooting for the sky.They grow about 3 ft a year or more. I know the white oaks are grander in character though, once mature, I got acorns from England for English oak and 3 put down roots they haven,t got leaves yet but I can see the taproot down in the soil and I was wondering if anyone knows if these are slow growers also? They are in the white oak family , right? My chestnut oak has no bristle tips and its one of the fastest growing trees I have , actually I have 2 Chestnut oaks that grow fast, they are considered in the white oak family from what I,ve read. I do realize that Quercus Alba is seperate from the other white oak family members. Any educated guesses on the English and Chestnut oak growth rates is appreciated. My soil is rich and loamy, dark and fertile, I mulch around all my trees, water in drought. Give bunny manure bedding composted to all my small trees that are starting out. Poaky1
