New to planting trees and have several questions

This very day I planted my first tree. A dwarf northstar cherry.

As I was digging the hole, the soil was VERY rocky, and I noticed few worms. So as I filled in the hole, I took a lot of time and picked out nearly every rock and were I could I added some organic matter. (the sod I dug up, a few handfulls of old leaves) At the end I watered it very well and mulched it with some pine bark chips.

So I have a few questions.

1) Should I fertilize it. If so when and how.

2) Is there any way to add organic matter to the soil after the tree is planted? Was adding the leaves and things a good idea?

3) I read in another post that most of a trees roots spread out in the top 20 cm of soil. Given this, should I go ahead and dig out the rocks beyond the 3 foot hole I dug today to give the tree room in the future?

Thanks in advance for your help.
