Newbie Help needed engine replacement Question

I would like the replace my craftsman 12HP briggs 281707 with a new engine. It has 3 amp DC - 5 amp AC dual circuit alternator. If I go with a little bit higher HP engine they have a 3 amp DC 9 amp AC alternator . DO you think this extra 4 AMPS AC will damage my riding mower wiring harness? Say diodes in there or something to that effect? Thanks in advance.

The answer to your ? about damage due to the "extra 4 amps" is: "NO" The Amp output is only the "Maximum potential" of the alternator AC circuit. Since you aren't making any changes to the electrical load of the machine, you will not be asking for 9 Amp from the alternator, and it will only supply what is needed, up to a maximum of 9 Amp. The AC output circuits of these "Dual output" generators is typically used to operate only headlights and/or other "illumination devices" if the vehicle OEM opts to do that. The DC output circuit takes care of maintaining the battery voltage level in most cases.

Ditto to what mownie says about the AC.
My references only list DC CURRENT and AC VOLTS. Interesting to see AC AMPS listed? Also having more AC AMPS than DC??

You MIGHT have a different CONNECTOR from the engine on the new one however.

Do you have the model & type #'s from BOTH engines?

Main problem is fuel pump. Does it have one or not? Gravity feed models don't have fuel pump or block cast for one, sure it has the outlines from the mold, but there is no hole. So if yours has a fuel pump mounted on the block you have to have a model that has a fuel pump unless you want to relocate the gas tank which would be harder than any other modification. I just done a similar one, when from a 16HP to a 17.5 HP. Crank shaft pulley mount bolt was bigger, block to frame mount bolts was bigger, and starter didn't solonoid, I used the old starter cause I didn't want to do extra wiring till the old starter breaks. Other than that it was a piece of cake.

Tigerdunes, I have rcvd the updated Bryant quote. Here are my 3 options laid out. Are these apples to apples comparison? The differences I see are 1st quote has only 10 year part/1 year labor warranty while 2nd has 15 yr for both. 1st quote is reusing lineset and 2nd quote is new lineset. 1st quote threw in free 5 year maint, 2x/year. Again, another option is to fix & replair Blower motor/cap on my existing system Carrier 58zav for $903. Hi, The guys on the site are great and helped me decide what to buy. Ryan is spot on, get at least 3-4 more bids, Trane or American standard, Carrier would be my suggestion. Prices do vary but that seems very high I just had Trane 3 1/2 ton installed and love it. The quote to replace my coil was 900 but my fan was also going. I replaced a builders grade York only 8 yrs old. I did research for 2 weeks it is worth it . I had bids from $4700 to 8,4oo. You can see what I purchased it's on page 5, titled Trane xr 14 vs. Carrier 16. I asked all the sales reps. the same exact questions and compared what they said or recommended. Good luck and do your homework. I know more about Seer, Eer, hspf then I ever wanted to know. Checkout the dealers with the BBB and make sure you get the ach certicate from the dealer for the tax credit before they start the job.

Hello Broncosfan,

Your 3 amp charging system has a two wire connector that plugs into a two wire connector on the tractor. One wire from the engine is DC power - equipped with a diode. The diode prevents battery voltage from flowing back to the engine and discharging the battery. The other wire is the AC power that feeds the headlight switch.

The 9 amp system has a one wire connector that delivers DC voltage. The tractor two wire connector will not plug into the replacement engine without some type of modification that connects the engine DC wire to the Tractor DC wire. If you attempt this, do not wire in the original diode as it is not needed.

After connecting the DC to DC wire, you will need a power source for the tractor AC wire. One solution is to connect this wire to the DC power. I suggest installing a fuse at the connection point. The real problem with this modification is the possibility of dead batteries if the headlight switch is left in the "on" position.

My recommendation is to select a Briggs replacment engine. Transfer the original charging system to the new engine.

DO you think this extra 4 AMPS AC will damage my riding mower wiring harness?

These aren't my favorite designs, BUT:

The 3 amps DC is typical of the battery charge circuit.

AND the AC circuit MUST be matched to the light bulbs in the tractor. So the lights need to take 9amps, or 4.5 amps each (if it has 2 bulbs).

Strange as it may seem, either 6v or 12 volts bulbs may be used. 2 30watt 6 volt bulbs or 2 60 watt 12 volt bulbs.

More strangeness. If the 30 watt 6 volt bulbs are to dim, go to 25 watt bulbs. If they burn out to quick, go to 35 watt bulbs.

Or even easier, just ignore the lights and mow in the daytime.
