K46 Tranny Question

I have another thread where I told of my problems with my transmission on my JD L120 mower, and I was told that I could change the fluid by removing the transmission from the mower. Taking the tranny off the mower was a breeze. I also found what is probably the cause of my problems, some kind of black rubber seal is cracked allowing the oil to run out. It's round, about 1 1/2" inches in diameter and partially obscured by the fan. Anyway, the latest problem is that there is a plug like I've never seen preventing me from getting the oil out. It had what looked like a filler cap, but when I pulled it off there was a weird looking plug underneath. It also has a little vent hole in it about 1mm in diameter. Is this where the unit was factory sealed and air bled?

I have a pic, but haven't been successful in trying to post it.

Hmmm.... I just replaced that belt on my LT155. What a joy (not) that was. Are you positive that the belt is routed correctly, and that all the tension springs are back where they belong? With the parking brake off, the belt is pretty tight on my tractor. I would get underneath and double check that everything is where it should be. And just because the belt is the right one, double check that, too--I got a bad timing belt for my Freedom 42 cutting deck once--it had a few teeth that weren't right and would cause the whole belt to jump a few teeth every rotatation--resulting in the clash of metal under my mower deck--very frustrating until I figured out what was wrong. I'm guessing that either the dealer gave you the wrong belt, the belt is mislableled, or some part of the pulley system isn't properly reassembled....... Let us know how you make out. These things can be frustrating!!!!

Good choice. That X500 will do everything you ask of it. If you were looking for the 25 year machine, I believe you've found it. You should look into a Hayes enterprise sleeve hitch and a brinly back blade for when you start expanding the property. If you decide to get into row-crop gardening, you can find a lot of good deals on Brinly turning plows, cultivators, and discs online. Then get an earthway walk-behind seeder/planter and you'll be all set. You couldn't dream of doing those things with the X300. I highly recommend filling the rear tires with windshield washer fluid for snowplowing. Do a quick search (at the bottom) and you can find the post where I offered a few hints on one way to do it. Did you get the HDAP tires?

The simple answer is yes, the pedal (or hand lever if hand controlled) moves a valve inside the hydro unit to direct the flow of oil from the hydraulic pump to the hydraulic motor(s). The PUMP always turns in the same direction and oil flow through the pump is always in the same direction. The VOLUME of oil flowing through the PUMP is always the same (for a given RPM). When the direction control pedal (or lever) is in NUETRAL, all the oil output from the PUMP is directed through the valve and dumped straight back into the sump cavity of the tranny case. When the control pedal (or lever) is moved to FORWARD or REVERSE, the control valve moves and begins flowing SOME oil through the DRIVE MOTOR(s) in the correct direction to make the motor rotate for the corresponding direction of travel for the machine. Depending on how fast you want to go, you will move the pedal a little or a lot. If you move it a little, you will go slow (and most of the oil will be dumped right back into the sump with just a little oil flowing through the motor). If you move the pedal all the way to the end of its travel, you will go fast (with practically ALL of the oil flowing through the motor and very little being dumped directly into the sump. I should point out that after the oil passes through the motor, it is dumped back to the sump. There are provisions in some hydro units to direct oil through a filter (either external or internal) so that debris and metal flakes can be trapped, but essentially, what I described above is the way hydros operate (generically). The "dynamic braking" of a hydrostat is due to the hydraulic principal that a liquid can not be "compressed" (it can be "pressurized" but not compressed to to a smaller volume), and in that respect, when you flow oil through a hydraulic motor at a given "flow rate", the motor will only turn as fast as that volume of oil flow will allow it to turn, regardless of load. When you "let up" on the pedal (or lever), you decrease the amount of oil flowing through the motor and thus the motor speed MUST also decrease and the vehicle speed is retarded.

The X300 is still a 'real' Deere. Nothing wrong with that machine; as with anything in life so long as you use it for what it was intended.

You can go to Tuff Torq's web site and take a look at the diagram for your tranny. I think the part you are talking about is the tranny vent, but on the K46 it may also be the oil filler hole as well. My K51 has this same plug, but it is separate from another big cap where the oil goes in. When I emailed Tuff Torq they sent me a quick reply (next day) which included instructions and pictures on how to change the oil on my unit. They also confirmed it was OK to use synthetic oil as a replacement. The recommended oil weight for my tranny was 5w50. Mobil1 is not available in this weight, but Castrol Syntech is and that is what I used.

i meant to inform you of that in the other thread. the second rubber plug under the cap comes out as well. i used a pocket knife to GENTLY pry around it and pop it up a little at a time. don't rip it, just a little leverage to work each side up.

Hey davidandkasie, I am in Batesville. I haven't logged on since I took the tranny off. I found the parts I needed on Tuff Torq's website last week, ordered the replacement seals, and got them yesterday afternoon. Got some oil for the tranny, put on the new seals, and got everything back together with no problems. Now my problem has gone from bad to worse. Now the mower will hardly move at all, and it sounds like there's rocks in the transmission. I really didn't sleep well at all last night. :(

I don't know about the rock sounds, but as far as hardly moving, did you get all the air out of the tranny. You have to put the rear end up on blocks and go from forward to reverse and repeat until all the air is purged, it can take 10-15 minutes before all the air gets out.

If you changed the oil in the tranny, you probably didn't bleed the air out of it. Here is a procedure:

1. Jack up the tractor on jack stands so the rear wheels can spin freely, and the tractor is secure.
2. Start engine and operate at low idle
3. With either a weight or a person in the seat, repeat opening and closing the tow release valve (wheel release lever ), while depresing fwd and rev. pedals.
4. Once wheels run at normal speed, increase engine speed
5. Continue by placing tractor on the ground, and doing panic starts and stops at full throttle - until tractor gives proper start/stop response.
6. Recheck oil level and top-off if necessary.

Thanks for the info guys. I was hoping it had something to do with bleeding the air out because I knew there was nothing that I connected wrong or failed to re-connect. I am going to get right to work on it as soon as I get home.
