Winter Sowing Exchange

wanted: restarting ws garden--sasbe, anyone?

Last year I didn't do much WSing at all because hubby and I had recently moved into our dream house. The sad part was that I left behind my dream garden (WSed, swapped or gifts, mostly from Bakemom--THANKS again!) at our old house.

I was going to pick up several packets of seeds this fall and go whole-hog on WSing again this year, but it appears as though I'm a little late on the seed-buying. Most stores have apparently already pulled their stock for the season.

Does anyone have seeds they'd be willing to share for SASBE? I'm not picky, although my preference is for plants that don't require much coddling. :) They will go into a full-sun, well drained area.

Special wants if anyone has extras:

--calendula, any variety

--black-eyed Susan, any variety

--poppies

--sunflowers

--blanketflower

--any and all herbs

--nicotiana

--bachelor buttons, perennial

--marigolds, any variety

--coneflower

I don't have any sprouts in my Columbines yet, either. Because I want all my containers dumped by the end of June (don't want to bother watering anything but the very special ones), I'm probably going to dump them where I want them to germinate. I'm sure they will, they're just going to do it in their own time. Delphiniums...I tried for WSing them for three years, and the third year, I heard something about them liking it kinda dark. So I put them under a chair on the porch where they barely got any sunlight. Ouila! They sprouted. This probably wasn't a fluke-- by my un-scientific analysis-- because I re-started some Delphs again this year, after losing a container to a rainstorm. I set the container in the shade garden because by this time of year, there is too much sunlight for too long of a time anywhere else. I had sprouts within just three weeks. So my advice for starting Delphs is put 'em in heavy shade. Linda

wow you all have a great headstart on things. I have mostly seeded things I want to grow on all summer in the greenhouse (3 tomato plants every 2 weeks for the last 6 weeks....those 9 plants provide us with tomatoes from Early June to late October. I started sage, basils (4 types), parsly (2 types), thyme and will continue to do that every 2 weeks for the next month. I have the seedlings I want to use in my containers...Alyssum, pansies, marigolds, lobilia, dahlia, tuber begonias that sort of thing up and doing well. I started some perennials/bi-annuals....sweet Wm, painted daisies, Dianthus (pinks) Everything is still small but as I begin to transplant it expands quickly and I have to bring them all in overnight everynight still until the nights warm us a bit more. It's a bit of work right now but so worth it. I have to reread some of the things you all have started. It's interesting.

Thanks Dawn. Will soak them now. Note to Ilene: Thanks for the info on the walking onions. I purchased a pot of walking onions last spring at Farmer's Grain in Edmond. I separated them when I planted them and they all multiplied at the base. I pulled a few recently to season a dish and they look like thick green onions. They never formed bulbs at the top and "walked". Do you think they just need longer to get established? When I bought them last year the clerk said "you know, these are just for the flowers", but since they were with the herbs and veggies, I thought maybe she just didn't realize what they were so didn't ask any questions.

Thank you everyone. I am having trouble typing right now so I can't respond to each of you at the moment but I wanted to clarify that I am not rafor. I tried setting up a photobucket account the other night and I felt like each page just got hung and I'm not sure I ever actually set up an account. Is it always that slow? We have grayish white trim througout our house because we replaced all of the windows in our house with Anderson Woodright windows that were prepainted. I insisted on realwood mullions because I like the look of them architecturally better than the mullions inside the glass. We had to match our trim to them....DH is my painter and he will not repaint them. I will try to add more later. The keyboard on this computer is sticking and making it hard to type right now. Do you still need any herbs? I have commercial packs of a couple different varieties of basil, parsley, and dill.
