Winter Sowing Exchange

WANTED: lonicera sempervirens (coral honeysuckle)

I have only tried to winter sow this once - with no luck - but read that fresh seed works better so that may have been my problem. I'm hoping someone might have a couple seedlings to trade or would try to collect some seeds for me this summer.

I want this specific honeysuckle species for hummingbirds but a cultivar of the same species would work if the flowers are red like 'Alabama Crimson'. This plant is the one I want most from my wish list so you'd make me very happy if you have it to share.

I love this honeysuckle too, bought mine last year from a nursery that specializes in some unusual plants. I do not have any seeds at the moment. (they can be very slow starting from seed or even cuttings. But once started it grows very fast withuot being invasive. Cuttings of honeysuckle are easiest from new growth. (Before it turns woody) My old growth is starting to put spring leaf now, I should have viable cuttings soon.

If you don't get any in a month or so let me know, I would love to have some of your heuchera

Thank you Frances! I'm typically unsuccessful with cuttings of anything unless it's something I can just stick in the ground like sedum. lol I might be willing to try. Are you going to root some cuttings yourself?
You said they can be slow starters. I wonder if it could even get through its first winter in the ground if I start it from seeds or cuttings.

cindra, You have to admit. That's one funny piece of art...it's very exposed and I have a feeling in this case, the microclimate might even be lower to a zone 4. Let's get creative shall we... You can plant vines like the dropsmore honeysuckle vine (up to zone 2) or the mandarine kind (up to ZOne 4). Check out the Sheridan Nurseries online garden guide so you can see what these look like. May not be the same as your coral vine but I think it's close enough. Also how about explorer roses and perhaps a clematis. The new dawn is also a hardy plant. My point is - why settle for one kind of vine. I do this all the time. This way, you have continuous blooms month after month. I also like to plant annuals climbers alongside perennial vines, like moonflowers... etc....... You can plant evergreens(cedars, hollies) besides the tire, forming a natural archway... Bend the tips over and above the tire..in time it will look natural. I think you made an nice entrance, despite it may be suited to people of shorter stature (kids).... You have plenty of opportunity here to design a 'magical garden'... straight from a hobbit's home.... or perhaps you will have created a circular window looking out into a scene... In Asian mythologies, circles are considered good luck. You could also cover exposed areas of the tire with sphagnum moss, chicken wires and plant hens and chicks - which are great in open zones such as yours.

Just move the shoots to where you want them to wrap and they'll do the rest on their own! Note that they do eventually form a woody trunk and as you indicate, they bloom on new growth, so you need to get it covering first to obtain the basic structure and then prune back to the woody parts on the trellis to encourage the new growth to sprout from there each season.

Figured I'd update this post since when I first created it I couldn't find anything that really helped me with what I wanted to do that wasn't just a traditional trellis. First thing I'll say is I'll never grow passionflowers in the ground anywhere near my house again. Both native types - passiflora incarnata and passiflora lutea - spread around the yard and every week I was pulling tens of sprouts. The Variegated Frittilaries loved it and it was fun seeing caterpillars but what a headache. Keep them in containers, or way out in the woods. So I stuck with Loniceras. I went with two trellises on two sides of my house (one by the deck, another on the other corner) that wrapped 180 degrees around half the gutter and grew Major Wheeler on it. These were cool trellises but a little pricey. I liked this setup, I just had to keep it trimmed or it would look a little unkempt on the house. And since Lonicera sempervirens is a twining vine I didn't worry about it attaching to or ruining the hardiplank. And I don't think ants like this vine because I didn't see many of them. The hummingbirds go crazy over this vine and I got great pictures of them over the years. Then I had the other corner of the screened in deck that I wanted to do something with so I used two strings of metal twine between eyehooks in the soffit and near the bottom of the deck. I did two strings because I felt that a honeysuckle vine might have difficulty twining up just one. Here I went with Lonicer sempervirens 'John Clayton' which might be my favorite vine. It's a vigorous grower and the color is awesome. But we moved out and I inherited a trellis over some stairs to the backyard on which I'm growing three Major Wheelers. I still want a John Clayton vine so I created a single post support for it in the back based on the instructions from here. I'll update this post with a picture after it's grown a bit.

They are very hardy once you get them going. I like to get them planted in the ground as soon as possible after they root even if the location is temporary. I find the survival rate is much better than if I keep them in pots. If the plants are still very small and the root systems not well developed, plant pot and all in the ground, mulch well and cover with a gallon nusery pot when it goes dormant for winter. (I have to put a brick on top of the pot to keep it from blowing away)

You probably get more winter weather than I do, so your plant is likely to go completely dormant in winter. Snow will actually insulate your pot and plant.

I may try a few cuttings and will post here when I have some if you think you might like to give it a try.

How many bracelets/necklaces/earrings/anklets
color beads
length
kind of clasp (toggle, barrel/screw, magnetic, lobster, etc and color (silver/gold)
Material to string it on - tigertail/metal, beading thread, stretchy stuff, nylon/fishing line, etc...

If you have some of your own beads I can do that too!!

I can also make dangle earrings!!! I have made a bunch for the local animal shelter and HIV/AIDS fundraisers in town.
