Newly planted Leylands turning brown on inside.

I have planted two Leyland Cypress trees about 2 months ago. They were 15gal and about 7ft from the soil. Ever since I planted them they have started to slowly turn a golden or brown color from the inside. I put two fertilizer spikes around each, even though the package recommended 3 for the size. I hope its not burning them. Also i tried to water them twice a week. The weather has been nice to cool for the majority of the time they've been planted and its rainied very week for the past two weeks. I have pictures but not sure if I can post on here. Any suggestions on the issue?

pix would really help

interior browning is normal.. and increased with stress.. like transplant ...

no CONIFER holds its needles forever .. and they shed the oldest ones.. which.. as the tree grows.. wait for it.. end up.. interior ...

NEVER fertilize a stressed plant ... and that includes a transplant.. and for what they are worth.. next time.. just send me the money for spikes.. and i will pray for them.. and it will have the same effect ...

water needs to be applied thru the entire root mass of the transplant ... and then allowed to near dry before you give them more water.. insert finger.. and water when the soil.. at depth is near dry .. a good blanket of mulch will aid the whole process ... if need be.. dig a small hole.. just outside the root mass.. and find out.. right now.. how wet it is down 6 or 8 inches ... and maintain that area as slightly moist.. but NEVER soggy ... for the rest of this year.. and in drought next year ...

There are links to both pictures. I understand that they will loose needles from the inside out as they get older but this has happened rapidly in 2 months. The trees had one or two brown spots when I got them. As for the spikes, they were giving to me by a neighbor.

A little more info would help: What have your temperatures been like the past 2 weeks? What did you plant them in? Native soil? A mix of native and amendment? Pure amendment? Did you fertilize them heavily at planting? Is it just leaf-dropping, or are they also wilting? Any freshly disturbed soil in the area (gophers)? If the roses were greenhouse grown and not hardened off to outdoor temperatures they may be dropping some leaves to adjust. Twice a week may not be enough once you hit hot weather.

Dig a small hole right beside one of the green giants (just outside where you mulched). Dig the hole maybe 1' deep and fill with water. Let it drain out and fill again. See how fast the water drains. If it drains out within 6 hours you should be alright and the green giants shouldn't be in any standing water. However, if you have soil like my soil... the water will not drain. It'll sit until it evaporates. If this is the case... they need to come up and you need to mound plant them. By mound plant them I mean sit them on the surface of of the ground and pile dirt around them. I have a large yard... I have some areas of my yard that drain alright and I can plant normally. The water will drain out of the hole in just a couple hours. I have other parts of my yard where water will not drain out of the hole at all. I didn't know the soil was holding water like this until some of them started turning brown. So I did a little investigating. I carefully pulled the conifers out of the ground and the hole was a bucket of water. If you have terrible clay that holds water... you can easily over water just about anything. If your test hole drains it could be that they are getting to much water... but at least it drains. If they're getting to much water it's an easy fix... just don't water and hope for no rain. They may brown up a little from stress which is no big deal. If they're sitting in water, they really need to be mound planted. Dig the test hole and let us know your findings.

thats interior browning.. its NORMAL ... and its increased due to the stresses of transplant ... it does not help it was a HUGE transplant... and the black mulch does the stress no favor either ... based on what i see today.. in this.. pic.. there is nothing to worry about ... it will all fall off by itself... i dont know what you mean by damaged.. if branches cracked.. prune them off ... right now.. you can tell.. what are the live part... when those start losing regular color.. is when you start to worry ... you water a conifer/tree... WHEN IT NEED WATER... no when can tell you when ... you water deeply.. and then let it NEARLY dry ... take a hand trowel .... and dig a 3 to 6 inch hole.. and find out.. how YOUR SOIL reacts to the water ... we never want standing water ... once the root mass that was planted is dampened... you dont really need to water all that much.. as the soil will rarely dry.. below a few inches.. and that is why i want to to dig small holes and find out ... 2.5 hours a week of water... sounds like a lot... even on my glacial sand ... but again.. only you can find out ... ken

based ont eh pic provided.. i have no opinion ... but interior browning is NORMAL ... and increased by transplant.. ESPECIALLY on huge transplants ... if it goes toward growth points.. your watering is failing ... they are stressed.. feeding them will not help ... and these plants will never need fert anyway ... if you had asked in advance.. i would have suggested you avoided a 28 plant monoculture ... be nice to know where you are ... ken

and that is ENTIRELY normal ...

dont worry about the spikes .. i hate wasting money.. and since you got them for free.. what the heck ...

life is all in the growth tips.. IF and WHEN those start browning .. then you have something to worry about ...

just work on PROPER WATERING.. and you should be all set ...

and if they 'appear' thin .. dont worry about it.. they will fill back in ... as the exterior grows ... [not from the interior]

Ken thanks for the info and that's good news to me. The wife was concerned since they weren't exactly cheap and we are low on funds right now.
