Angelica Gigas, biennial confusion

Not sure if this belongs here or in "annuals". Sorry if

I'm off topic.

I had three A.G. that flowered and set seed two years ago.

Last year I looked for seedlings and found none.

This year there are thirty at least, I'm thrilled, but

confused:

Did they not germinate until this spring and these are then the

first-year plants that will flower next year?

Or did I somehow miss them last year (not likely unless

they're very different and inconspicuous) and these

are the maturing second-year plants? Some are almost 2 feet tall.

Anyone have experience with these?

I love these plants and will try to find second-year plants again

so I can fill in the gap if these are first-year plants.

Same thing happened to me...except the part of getting seedlings.:) Can you take a picture of your seedlings so I'll know what they look like in case some do show up? Sorry I don't have any answers for you, but I'm curious about this, too.

I grow (or have grown) 'Southcombe Double' for the past five years or so. I can attest to ispahan's comment that it is weak. The first year or two was fine. The blooms are incredibly small. Second year I noticed that not all of the blooms came out double. I don't think it was reverting...my thought was that the conditions weren't right (sort of like how double daylilies put out singles when it is too hot, etc). I moved a couple years ago and can say with certainty that it does not appreciate anything less than ideal conditions! Overall, I'm not too impressed by it. Sorry :-( CMK

Can't tell where you live, but Ambergate Gardens in the southwest metro should have Angelica gigas(Korean Angelica). Remember it is a biennial. Rick

I, like you, really like those umbellifers. (I was blown away by Angelica 'Giga' several years back). I planted a few Angelicas a few years ago but even knowing they are biennial I thought I had lost them but I am reasonably confident that two will come into their own this season: Looking at pics of the foliage on-line I am quite sure that this is an Angelica 'Giga': And here is what I am hoping is my long lost Angelica sylvestris 'Vicar's Mead':

Angelica may not be a true biennial in that it can take a few years to bloom sometimes, but then dies after flowering and setting seed. The seed then needs a two month cold period to germinate, so yes, you are seeing the seed from last year sprouting this year.

I've seen plants go for 3, 4, and 5 years without blooming, then they set tons of seed and die.

Anitamo, here's a picture of a seedling from may 29, they are
bigger now.
No way I would have missed these last year, they don't look like
anything that grows there.
Prairiegirl, I lucked out and got some at a local nursery that
has the occasional quirky thing, castor beans and such.

Chris, there were no seeds last year, the plants set seed in '06,
that's what confuses me. Maybe conditions were somehow perfect
for germination this year?

Thanks for the photo. I haven't seen any of that in my yard, so guess I'll need a new plant. Things like this is what makes gardening so much fun...and a real learning experience. Keep tabs on it, then you'll be the expert to go to about AG.

Thanks so much for sending the photo. I've bought Angelica
Gigas plants three times. They were weeded out by my helpful sons who mow, they disappeared. Now there is a
seedling growing right in the foundation of our house. I
didn't recognize it! Yea!!

I even love the ordinary angelicas which grow by themselves in ditches along farm fields around here. Haven't successfully transplanted them. I expect seeding is best.

I'm still trying to figure out if it took an extra year for the seeds to germinate
and if these are first year plants.
I know, time will tell, but I sure would like to know what happened.
