Celebration Sights

I had time for only a few photos last Sunday at the Celebration of Old Roses, but being in that room was a sensory experience.

I don't think I've ever seen a Celebration with such a massive display of bloom.

Here's a quick glance. The lady in the lower left is leafing through The Tea Book.

Jeri, Michael and I were so busy selling roses for Gregg that I never even saw you! We did talk to Clay in the morning. Everyone said the tables were the best ever. I love the Celebration.

I've also had good luck with Hotwire. When we had our HM in NYC, we stayed at a place called the Buckingham, really close to Central Park and Carnegie hall. It is closed for up to another year for renovations, but the place was very charming with beautiful parquet floors. We had what was basically a 1-BR apartment with a small kitchen, so we could do heat leftovers and store snacks. It was wonderful since we felt like we lived like NY'ers for a week. Le Parker Meridien is across the street.

Thanks everyone - it really was a fun experience. The recipe is good, but like any card carrying CFer, I would probably tweak it just a bit LOL! I actually think it would be even better with salmon chunks, sprinkled with fresh dill and served with plain couscous and a salad.... but I'm not sure that would appeal to the RR audience LOLOLOL! San Diego Area Honeymoon

Disneyland and San Diego are where we spent our honeymoon almost 34 years ago. We took the kids on the same trip about 20 years ago. We had to wait until the youngest was over the minimum height requirement for the Disney rides. They were only getting one trip to Disneyland and one to DisneyWorld out of us. Anyway, we stayed in La Jolla both times and really liked it. Sea Lions were great, the zoo which had switched directions between our trips from a tourist event to a teaching/research facility which was really interesting. I don't have much more to add to what has already been mentioned.

Roses, the garden without sight?

bart so sweet!!! I shall. It really was something in my eye that wouldn't come out despite drops etc etc. Which finally did. But you're right, one never knows. Anyway if I do go blind, I've decided I'll plant a lot of boxwood hedges as guides. I'm also quite curious about what it's like to "garden" (plant, tend, amend the soil, mulch, water, deadhead, remove caterpillars, train and move things, etc.) without seeing. I'm going to experiment a little with that this weekend if I have time to garden. I love this part in the book "Green Thoughts: A Writer in the Garden" by Eleonor Perenyi, from the chapter on "Night": "A garden, however familiar, is another place on a summer night [...] the biggest change is that of proportion and texture produced by seeing things in black and white. My first experience of the phenomenon wasn't in a garden, or at night, but in Rome in broad daylight, in the company of a friend who is colour-blind. I had always known this about him and never grasped the significance until one day I stupidly said something about the apricot glow of Roman palaces. 'You forget' he said gently ' I don't see that. I don't know what you mean.' The words were more than an embarrassment, they were a revelation, for he was the subtlest of observers, who had often pointed out to me details and refinements in paintings and architecture, and even plants, which, blinded in my own way by colour, I had missed [...] Strolling among the ruins on the Palatine, my friend had again and again identified the wild flowers growing there by their shapes, pointing out to me especially the beauty of the acanthus..." bart, also I think you should invite Andrea and his wife to your garden! Well, I never left the HRGroups table, myself. Well, hardly. I was busy with the Silent Auction, and questions. And my back is touchy. I didn't see Gregg 'til late in the afternoon.
Starting to think about next spring, already!

Oh, a hop, skip and a jump.
Just north of Berkeley, on the East side of SF Bay.

AAMOF, several of us cut roses in the Heritage on Saturday for the Sunday display.
And I think we'll do that again next year.
We had a great time, and added substantially to the display.
(I'd just like it to be about 30 degrees cooler next year!)

LOTS of roses were for sale. Vintage was there. So was Russian River Roses. There were roses on the raffle table, and roses in the Heritage Roses Group Silent Auction that Jeri put together. You could buy the cuttings of roses at the end of the day, too. Anybody who left without a rose (or geranium, or iris, or other plants) just has too much willpower. I drove down with several cemetery rose garden people (notice the logos on some of the volunteers in Jeri's picture), and my car was incredibly fragrant with their roses on the way home.

As for me, I ended up with a Vintage mother plant of Etoile de Lyon, thanks to a friend. Jeri's DH helped me get it into the car - those mother plants are HUGE. My DH helped me get it out of the car, but hasn't promised to dig the giant hole that's going to be needed. A gorgeous plant.

It really is possible to combine a trip to San Jose and El Cerrito, no problem - you could even go to Vintage on Saturday, the Celebration on Sunday, and San Jose on Monday!

I am bummed I missed the event. We moved out camping trip to the week before Memorial Day to miss the crowds.

I have never been to the celebration and just learned of it this year when I was at the Sacramento open garden.

It was a hot day in California for sure! Thanks for the pictures Jeri!

I've missed this event several years now. It has always been for an excellent reason, but darn it, this has got to stop!
