Time to expand the echinacea campaign (to davesgarden and other)

Hello

I've been reading the forums about echinacea lately, and I agree with echinaceamaniac 100% that these plants are not what people say they are. If anybody is on davesgarden, or any other website that involves gardening in general, I invite you to come on over and share your opinion. My hope is that any gardener who is even considering buying these plants does not. People deserve to know the truth about these plants.

And for those of you who are sitting down at your computer laughing at us, just know that this will come back and bite you in the %$#!. Now that we know that you are all dishonest crooks and swindlers we will NEVER purchase anything from you or anyone else that you are affiliated with.

Anyways, now that I've ranted on about this, PLEASE join me and help me spread the truth about these EVIL plants before it's too late.

Um, y'know - while I'm all for sharing honest experiences, this is starting to take on tones of a vendetta....

Perhaps it's just time to chalk up the losses to experience, swear off buying any new cultivars, particularly from this hybridizer, and call it a day.

I posted the info at Dave's Garden. I can't believe the way the plant business works. Not one article in America have I seen that was honest about these plants. The only article I've seen mention it was from the UK. These magazines could inform people but all they do is promote these plants. Do you think they would honestly discuss a plant from one of their sponsors. I did notice today that more and more places are selling seed grown varieties.

I really think it's possible that Echinacea is actually damaged by tissue culture. I don't believe it's the genetics of the plant. I think it's the hormones, etc. they are using in the process.

I was at a nursery yesterday that had gallon pots of Mac n cheese... 4 pots in bloom. One looked like the photo.. no quilling... nice flowers. The others looked like Tiki Torch. Not even close to a yellow.. just orange. Hopefully just mislabeled pots. And they had a Tomato Soup gallon that had a single bloom... again a very nicely formed flower... and the red actually matched the label... nice and vibrant red. It will be interesting to see if they hold their color though for very long.

First of all, I rarely post on this forum and have NEVER to my knowledge posted about Terra Nova before. Let alone ganged up with Gardengal to "rattle" about them. I run into Gardengal on many forums because we seem to have similar interests but I've never met her nor emailed with her though I'd like to. I usually post on Clematis and Northwestern Gardening though I visit many other forums occasionally. I was stunned to see someone criticizing Terra Nova which was done in the first post. To me Dan Heims is a local garden celebrity and hero to plant collectors everywhere. I have no knowledge of how long they trial their plants and no knowledge of their plants not doing well in other zones. I certainly am not admitting anything or modifying my defense rattle in any way because I haven't participated in any discussions about Terra Nova in the past. I have dozens of Terra Nova cultivars in my garden and don't have any problems with them other than Autumn Blush corepsis which I've killed twice. I do have an online friend who is in the garden design business in NY and she loves Terra Nova plants too. I do not work for Terra Nova, I was a florist for twenty three years and now sell gifts and home decor wholesale to stores. I have talked to Dan Heims once on the phone because I was interested in hiring one of his former employees. That is the extent of my personal contact with him. He gave her an excellent reference and I did hire her and she was an excellent employee but Terra Nova wasn't a big part of our conversations. I have toured their display garden twice as part of an open garden tour here called Le Tour des Plants in the fall. It is an amazing garden.

Runmede, Thanks for sharing this information, and thanks for all the hours you've contributed to getting the word out and working to develop habitat to support the Monarchs. If we each could educate just a few close friends or colleagues and encourage them to mention these issues among their aquaintences, then a general consciousness of the problem would grow. Already, we've seen the growth of native plant businesses and the increased use of native plants in the traditional gardens. We just need to expand on the progress that has been made and keep building up momentum. Projects like yours will help immensely. Many of us don't have as many hours to devote as you do, but we can still help. I mentioned the Monarch plight during devotions at the start of our weekly business meeting. I also gave a brief explanation of how/why I garden the way I do at my office party, for a few folk who were hanging around by me. I get a chance to talk to patients and families on a daily basis, and once in awhile we get on to the subject of gardening or scary environmental changes--especially with cancer patients. Of course, I deal with whatever the patient needs, but if an obvious opening occurs in a conversation, I mention it as casual conversation. I have learned that broaching these issues needs to be done with extreme caution and sensitivity. The last thing we need to do is come across as superior and judgmental. I find the easiest way to be gentle is to just describe how I started gardening and reading on line and discovered how fun it is to observe the increase in the diversity of bugs and birds I saw in my garden in a short time. And mention how relatively carefree native plants are, since they evolved to exist in each region without the support of humans and irrigation or fertilizers. Depending on the audience, then you can observe how much less expensive it is to maintain a native garden patch than it is a manicured lawn--no watering, mowing, or weed killers. Plus, you get butterflies and hummingbirds! I should stop wandering. This is just how I'm treating myself Christmas morning. I'm procrastinating getting work done, which is due by the 31st. But, this feels at least as important, from a global sense. And I've already accomplished much of what work needs. Hope I've provided a bit of inspiration for some of you. I just have 2 species, purpureum and pallida. Neither have attracted butterflies at all. Butterflies can be hard to please sometimes. So far, the annuals I grow seem to attract the most - Verbena b., Cosmos 'Cosmic Orange', and Mexican Sunflowers. I just I looked at the Terra Nova site and they have some really nice plants, especially the coneflowers and some of their new coreopsis introductions. They do sell retail also. Did you see that deep pink Lobelia hybrid? So pretty. I love the new hot colors in the coneflowers and wondered how they would do. Did the Tomatoe Soup attract any butterflies last year and did it grow well for you, in the limited time you had to observe it? I hope I get some seedlings from your Lobelia cardinalis plant this year so I can put one in the front or side of the house. They are so great! I mean, you know I rarely went in the back yard last year, didn't water them or tend to them at all, and they just flourished and bloomed their heads off. What a sight they were! I got my containers ready today to WS. I know, I know, I am very late, and probably won't do as well with it as in the past. I have so many different red Salvias to sow (most of them later on), like regla, subrotunda, darcyi, coccinia, greggii, Lady in Red, Forest Fire, and finally got some Flame Acanthus (anisacanthus) seeds. I will share if you don't already have this plant. It is hardy to zone 7. If I ever get the Texas Crescents again, they use it as a host, but it is supposed to be a great hummer and butterfly plant, too. Tomorrow is milkweed sowing day. I should have plenty of time for these to get the requisite vernalization period. I just hope I get some decent germination from the seeds. I did sow my Passion vines - may have to carry over to next year if the seeds don't rot. Also, Caelsapinia gillesii which is hardy here, and Sassafras. I sowed the Sassafras in the TP and paper towel rolls should I get lucky enuff to have them germinate, I can transplant them roll and all. Did you see that Prairie Moon offers mixed flats? I got on their mailing list to see if some natives might emerge that are not currently in their catalog, including a couple of milkweeds that they were out of at the time, and this e-mail came thru. They could be really expensive, I don't know, since at the time, it wasn't something I intended to do. I think they would do up to 4 different plants in a flat, though, in case you want to check it out. Susan

I've never thought of any plant as "evil", with the possible exception of the one that said FEED MEsize> in Little Shop Of Horrors.

I think I'm going to start a penstemon boycott. Every time I plant them they die.

Surely it can't be MY fault, I simply planted non-native hybrids in soil and growing conditions they dislike.

Oh wait... the native varieties are growing wild at the back of my property...

I have become skeptical of the "latest-greatest cultivar/hybrid/selection" that the horticulture trade wants to promote, Echinacea or otherwise. Not to mention the many plants the trade has promoted - Bradford Pear, Burning Bush, some Miscanthus, Norway maple, etc. that have turned out to be invasive nightmares in certain regions.

Is a new cultivar worth a try? Sure - after they've been for sale and tested by the market for a few years, or maybe at a deep discount. I've got some that are real winners - Helianthus 'Lemon Queen', Phlox 'Nora Leigh', Eupatorium 'Chocolate', Helenium 'Mardi Gras'. Others has withered away over the years, consistently attacked by fungus or whatever, failed to overwinter, or not even made it through the first season!

Mostly I start plants from seed now - very cheap and fun - or buy small plants (Bluestone sale) or tree/shrub seedlings. Except for the occasional purchase of a plant for a special purpose.

Oh, c'mon people - get a life!! Seriously - EVIL plants?? "before it's too late"?? Too late for what?? They're hardly going to take over the world, since most of you claim they won't even grow for you.

Don't you have anything more important to occupy your time? If you want to take up a cause, there are a lot that are far more worthy to pursue, like the sales and spread of invasive species. In the grand scheme of things, a few reportedly weak echinaceas are just not worth getting worked up about. Let it go!!

Or genetically engineered crops, which might actually be "evil". Especially if someone can prove a link between pesticide enhanced plants and the bee/butterfly shortage.

I think it's up to us to decide what cause we want to take up. I think maybe you should take your own advice.
