I'm definitely no expert, so I'm anxious to see what everyone else says, but it sure looks grafted to me. What would radically pruned have to do with it being ownroot or grafted?

I would check with Star to see if they are growing own roots in the US or not. It looks grafted to me, but you never know--always best to go to the source.

Um, so the proper number of canes coming from the callous/graft should be one? If the lefthand large cane is also the blooming rose, then why would one not keep it? If it's all one rose (seems unlikely to me, but I'm not an expert), why wouldn't you want the rose to have a "y" configuration at the ground, with two equally strong canes at the base?

But I'll defer to the more experienced.

It looks grafted to me. I know Jungs did carry some grafted roses in the store this year but I assumed they were extras from Edmunds. Those were labeled as grafted. I didn't buy any own root roses from them this year except two minis and those looked fine. I didn't look closely at any of their roses so I can't tell you if the ones in the store looked grafted. The ones in the store are all bagged so it is hard to tell without buying them. I don't remember if they were Star Roses.

Why would they need to cut off canes to get to the correct number? Isn't more canes better?

I would say that rose is grafted..I had someone at a nursery tell me..and he was their 'rose expert' that what I was going to buy..."was not a rose...it couldn't be, it didn't have thorns' where do they find these people?

Yes, I ordered two last year from Jung and yes they also looked grafted to me too. I won't order from them again because of mis-representation.

It looks grafted to me too. I also fail to understand why someone would cut canes off so that it would "have the proper number of canes". That's ludicrous! It doesn't even look all that healthy.

Hopefully you paid with a credit card, because if it were me, the charge on it from that nursery would be disputed-immediately.

John, according to Michael, you are having a high ole time... glad to see you are one to question the unreasonable propaganda of the marketplace. This rose looks very much like every blasted body bag I ever brought home from Wally World.

All, my suspicions ae confirmed. It's been so long since I handled a grafted rose, I really wasn't sure. Well, I sent an e-mail with the picture back to Jungs. I'm peeved that I will lose a growing season; even if I get a refund, I doubt I can get RU or Chamblees to ship to me in June.

Normally I am happy with Jungs. They also sent me two lusty 'Livin Easy' roses that I know are own-root. But if they stumble on my 'Evelyn' order,, I may not be a repeat customer.

You are not doing anything of the kind. I been to Minneapolis. They don't have any beer selection. Merely three feet of beer in the store. I was aghast. I said to the in-laws, what do people do without beer here?

Whatever, Jung has screwed you. I just went to their website. They are out of Evelyn, and I suspect they sent you New Dawn or something. A perusal at Help Me Find shows the canes on Evelyn do not get that thick.
I bought some Star roses. They died.
In the future, do not chop your new rose to the ground every year. It blooms on old wood.

Regan sent me a bareroot of Ink Spots that has a Star tag on it, and the grafting work looks just as loffly as the jobbie you have there. Star ain't no supernova.

Wow, John - I'd be spectacularly pizzed to get that in the mail when I was expecting an own-root plant. Have you heard anything further from Jung's about this?

John, I do pop in now and then for a quick scan of the antique rose forum. I had the privilege of visiting Pamela's Red Rose Ridge last week while I was in the area, so posted a few photos on one of those threads.

And here - for you - from my garden last night, which is just starting its bloom, is the Marie Pavie your lovely photos so many years ago enabled me into. The wonderful Elmshorn is just behind it.

My favorite roses of all are the ones which bring to mind a special person. I always and forever think of you when I see Marie Pavie.

Personally, I think Jung's was in over its head in taking on Edmunds, in that they were unprepared for the expectations of the people who purchased from Edmunds. The Wing Dings I got from Jungs/Edmunds sucked big time in terms of their health, and they were also sort of budded.
The same plants from Weeks via a local rose Auction were significantly superior (and significantly cheaper, I might add). I would hesitate before doing business again with them unless they were the exclusive sales agent for a rose I really wanted.

No response from Jung's. Yet. I looked at Chamblees and ARE, but they're not shipping until Sept -- to late for me. High County has it, and they'll ship -- but for $13. That's almost as much as the plant. I guess I'll make do with the grafted chimera-thing Jung's sent to me. I hope it goes own-root someday.

Maybe Sequioa has it.

Ahhh ...no worries just glad your back but think Michael's line except go off on a tangent ... Robert De Niro, Amazon, reformed Conquistador, revolt against orthodoxy ... then rafted ... but it helps to have drawn your first breath in Bueno Aires to follow the my obscurity's to the blood orchid.

Evelyn was a tough one for me to finally succeed with - multi flora root stock and she usually turned to mush. Now seem to have found something in the formula and got one through two or three winters but no re-bloom.

... only Austins I found that work own root and with real vengeance are Gertrude and Falstaf. The former this spring I actually had to kick out of one bed because she was taking it over ("bad" wording but it works) which is unheard of in my garden for out of zone roses - yet one her namesake HP parent is very lame in the same area. Other lessors are Crown Princess Magarette (10 tried one made it), William Morris (10 tried one made it). All have between 5 to 7 winters own root.

Sure, Ann, I will be glad to attempt to kill it. White roses with a touch of pink are some of my favorites.
Right now rosa xanthina is in bloom. The red canes and ferny leaves make it a year around source of prettiness. I do nothing to care for them, just throw it a little hose water now and then.
Looking at helpMeFind, I'm finding almost nothing in the way of hybrids, and I wonder why. The hips are delicious and look like cherries, so the birds get them quickly.
The only other rose I have with red canes is Therese Bugnet.
Lately, I've been a little worried about species roses. Due to the increase in own root roses, I'm guessing, sources for species are drying up.
Lawyer's Nursery sold lots of species roses, but have quit most of them.
These ones that I got from them must have come from seed, as the flowers vary from white to yellow.

Glad to see you back, even under the circumstances.... I have had to return a couple of things to Jung's before and they have always been cordial and compliant. Too bad their rose expertise does not match their returns and exchanges service. I'm sure they'll give you your money back if you ask.

By the way, nice legs! No wonder Land's End couldn't resist hiring you.

John, can I say that I'm glad you got a lousy grafted rose from Jungs if that's what it took to bring you out of hiding? I haven't found a thread this entertaining since some of the old Magpie threads (Deb will know.) I've been laughing out loud and DH wonders if I'm losing it...

Really, I know how frustrating it is to waste a year over this kind of nonsense. They can give you your money back, but they can't replace this growing season. I hope at the very least it really IS Evelyn. Plant it deep and keep your fingers crossed.

Mille fleurs, it's all those leg lifts and squats I do.

I must admit there are a few Austins, Riku, that have done well for me (Mary Rose, Heritage, Tamora, Graham Thomas, Crocus Rose) and one that did nothing (Glamis Castle). The most solid performer is Heritage. Most winters it just dies back halfway. And those flowers come all season long! I am slowly convincing myself to expand the collection, hence Evelyn. Oh,and there's Teasing Georgia in there somewhere. I have yet to see a bloom. Guess what? That one came from Jung's.

Deb, wine came from the gods. It makes my day. Helps lubricate the fury of life. Beer makes men fat. I don't mind the bloom-less eglantines. The flowers are a big 'so what' and I could do without the bazillions of seedlings. But the scent of the leaves. Yum, It's been rainy this past week. I can smell my eglantine hedge all the way to my back door.

And past the brim of my wine glass. Eglantine, pinot noir and golden evening light. Very fine. Very fine.

Just want to tell you that if you planted the Evelyn rose you got, I don't think you will be sorry. I have ordered from Jungs for at least 15 years, maybe longer and with two exceptions, everything I have received was very good stock. On the two exceptions they sent me a credit immediately, no hassels. Just fill out the back of the packing invoice/slip and say it wasn't the quality you expected or whichever one seems appropriate to you. On the other hand, my grafted Evelyn from them is the toughest Austin rose I have. She will take just about anything, 20 degs below zero or 96 deg with 99% humidity; is one of my tallest, most proliferate rebloomers; very reliable.
