Best Buck Roses for zone 5/6?

Hello, I am new to this forum and need to know the Buck roses that will work well in this zone. I already have Golden Unicorn and love it. Thanks!

In addition to the answers you'll get, you might want to use the Search function to find a couple of good threads on best Bucks. You can then spot the replies from your zone and find some favorites that way.

Folksinger and Aunt Honey have done well for me. I lost Honeysweet over the winter. I just planted Hawkeye Belle, Prairie Breeze, Pearlie Mae, Quietness, Griff's Red, and Earth Song. I chose these because I have read other forum members in our zone liked them. I have Paloma Blanca on order.

GardenStyle, Welcome to Kentucky! There have been lots of changes and new varieties in the last ten years. I agree with Ken about Palatine, one of my favorite places to order and they excel in my garden. Wilson’s in Frankfort is still my favorite local nursery. I try to plant 1 - 2 inches below ground level, 2 is better. Thrips and Japanese Beetles are my major insect challenges even with spraying. Thrips are awful right now. Black spot is the major fungal problem and powdery mildew can be, depending on weather. Spider mites in warm temps and too much insecticide, a balancing act, can be expected, too. What are some of the varieties that you currently have, your likes and dislikes, and what region(s) have you grown roses? Louisville is the closest rose society in my area, very nice, helpful people. Some of my more vigorous, producers are: South Africa, Plum Purple, Poseidon, Heritage, Olivia Rose Austin, PJPII, Moonstone, Beverly, Grande Amore, Tahitian Sunset, Conundrum, Autumn Splendor, and Cooper. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder AND what’s doing good today. Currently, I have around 150 rosebushes, including the ones that look like twigs.

The species you listed above roseum elgans is pretty common in MA and do fairly well in both zone 5 and 6. I use to live in zone 6, just outside of Boston and now I am more northwest and in zone 5, and my rhodies have done well in both of these zones. English Roseum and Nova Zembla are the two varities I grow now, but they do take a long time to get to the height where they would provide privacy for you. Have you ever thought about Aborvitaes? They create a great privacy screen and if you purchase them at about 5 feet, they should grow faster than the Rhodys. They will also provide privacy in summer and winter, just like the rhodies will. Let me ask you what you mean by "take them in"? Are you going to plant them in the ground or in pots? If in the ground, I think you would do more damage by digging them up to take them in. Covering them with several inches of mulch should protect most of them pretty well. If you plan to plant them in pots, then you do need to do some planning for winter. You can either bring the pots into your unheated garage, or you can bury them (pot and all) in the ground to await next spring. There are plenty of discussions about these winter protection methods here on the site so you can get all the details. It is true that some minis are more winter tender than others, but if you do a good job of winter protection they should come through okay.

We live in the Mohawk Valley of Upstate NY. Our soil is clay. We have had two back-to-back, extremely cold winters in a row. We had a lot of temps in the negatives (like -15 and lower) and single digits this year. The average temperature this past winter in the month of February was 9 degrees (the temp never rose above freezing the whole month), and we had over 20 days below zero over the winter! Not to mention all the snow we received (which still hasn't melted). March felt like "normal" January weather with highs in the 20s and 30s, but today (April 2) it is supposed to finally get up past 50 to maybe even 60! I am on the fence about creating a hedge, but my wife doesn't want to put up a fence. We have a couple yews and hollies on our property that recently suffered winter burn. From what I have read online, they will likely recover. We are trying to figure out what would be the best cold hardy shrubs that we could use to create a hedge. We would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.

Country Dancer and Earth Song grow very well here in central Ohio (Marysville); no spray, no winter protection.

Many thanks for all the replies and the link to the thread on Bucks! I see that Heirloom Roses has certain Buck roses on sale ($13.95 from $16.95)until May 21. So far I have decided on Prarie Sunrise, Aunt Honey, Serendipity, Winter Sunset and Blue Skies! Thanks Again.

Chamblee's has a nice selection, too. I ordered three Buck roses for $8.95 each last week. They're in one-gallon pots, I believe, so the shipping actually came to more than the roses. Looking forward to them!

I also ordered from Chamblee's. Great roses. I ordered some from Roses Unlimited. Nice. All mine are own root.
