can't find non detergent motor oil

I have an Everride Hornet ZTR mower. It's great. Manufacturer specifies 20w50 non-detergent motor oil in hydraulic system. I need to top it off now, and to change oil in future. I can't find 20w50 non detergent oil. I e-mailed manufacturer a couple of times to locate a source for oil, but they have not responded. Does anyone have a source for 20w50 non-detergent motor oil? Thanks.

You might check a hardware store. I don't know about 20W50, but I found some straight 30W non-detergent oil at an Ace Hardware store sometime back.

You might be able to order it from a NAPA dealer. I've found ND oil at Tractor Supply stores too.

If you still cannot pull the cord, remove the spark plug to see whether any oil in the cylinder. The only time I can think of is if you over filled oil and oil still got into the cylinder in upright position. Try remove the plug first and see. If you can pull it, clean the plug and try starting it and let it run for a little bit and see whether it will clear itself up. Make sure you ring the air filter dry a little also. All else fail, post the symptoms and what else you did and we'll see. As I said it is not an uncommon thing for these little Hondas, don't get ahead of yourself just yet. IF all else fail, then start the panic!!!!

I use either All Free and Clear or Cheer Free. Finding Cheer isnt always easy for me; it seems Tide has a monopoly on the market in my neighborhood. Most of the time I can only get All Free and Clear. I found Tide was the worstÂall of their detergents really faded my clothes--fast. I found Tide HE takes the dye off dark clothes, but leaves the dirt and stains on lights like towels and sheets. Years ago I took a textile class, the professor was adamant we NOT use Woolite--she said the stuff was caustic for fibers. I noticed since I stopped using detergents with perfumes and dyes my clothes don't fade as much. Allergies and psoriasis forced me to switch to perfume and dye free detergent; less fading of my clothing was an unexpected bonus. I live in black: black jeans; black t-shirts; black slacks; black jackets; black warm-up suits; black sock; black everything. If itÂs not black, itÂs navy blue. I have at least 2 dozen black t-shirts and 12 pair of black jeans in regular circulation--and a couple dozen "faded" ones for back-up. Because I wear so much black, fading is very noticeable to me. IÂm wearing a pair of deep (nearly black) navy jeans right now. IÂve washed them 4 or 5 of times (in All Free and Clear), yet they are still so dark you would think they were brand new. I admit it took me awhile to get use to the absence of perfume. I used scented detergent and fabric softener for years; I associated the artificial scent with "cleanliness"Âwhen I was forced to make the switch I really missed the clean "smell" of my laundry:( My "No Fade" Laundry Routine: (*I understand I have the luxury of time now that my kids are grown and I no longer work--not everyone has such luxury and/or the desire to put this much energy into the task of laundry.) 1) I wash my darks inside out. 2) I do not over load the machine; I only fill my machine one-half to three-fourths capacity. I ignore what the manufacture says about capacity, soak six pair of jeans in water and see for yourself how heavy they get. Sure, the machine can handle more than six pair of soaking wet jeans, but friction destroys fiber--itÂs the jeans that cannot handle the weight and friction of six pair of jeans. I place items loosely in the tub so nothing is balled up. 3) I Measure! Measure! Measure! I use the correct amount of detergent for the load; too much detergent will cause fading. 4) I shake each garment out before I place it in the dryer; this allows for more even drying as nothing is balled up, twisted up, or knotted up. 5) I do not over dry; I stop the machine before cycle is up and remove clothing when there is just a tad bit of moisture in the fabric and hang everything up dry the rest of way. Note 1: Mineral content in water will make clothes fade. If you have "hard" water a cup of vinegar added to the wash cycle will dissolve the minerals if you donÂt have a water softener or if you water isnÂt "hard" enough to justify the expense of a water softener. But a cup of vinegar is for a full load, using a standard agitator machine; I donÂt know how much vinegar to use in a FL or HE TL machine. Note 2: ShrinkageÂmy former textile profession told me most shrinkage of natural fibers occurs when clothing sits in the residual heat in dryer after the cycle is finished; so if time constraints donÂt allow you to remove clothing just before the cycle is complete; try to remove and cool clothing as soon as the cycle ends.

I thought I was the only crazy one. I bought a mingle iron back in June. Before buying it I plugged it in and it seemed to work just fine. I did notice some oil on the right side where the motor is. The woman said the iron has been down the basement since she bought the house from 20 years ago. We logged it up the basement steps and into the back of my van. Given that the mangle iron Is very heavy, “ 150, 200 pounds,” we plugged it in again before removing it from my van. It worked. I was so excited, I thought I found a treasure. So we manage to get it up a flight of stairs and placed it across from my washer and dryer. We plugged it in and it started smoking. That was in June, I haven’t done anything with it since. My dreams of having iron sheets, tablecloth, napkins went up in smoke. I have spoken to a man in the neighborhood who works on old motors he said he would work on it for me but I have to get it to him. I’m not sure how to remove it. So, What worked for you?

A multi weight non detergent sounds odd. Many higher end hydros use Mobil 1 20W50 synthetic.

The Everride Hornet service manual does not specify non detergent oil. It specifies SAE 20w50. It doesn't mention detergent or non detergent.

I was at NAPA after my post and they never heard of a multi-grade ND oil.

Thanks for the responses.
So far I was only able to find 30W non-detergent oil. In the FAQ's on their web site they specify 20W50 non-detergent for the hydraulic system.

According to their manual, it just says 20W-50.

Oil Type
Q: Specifically, what type of oil should I use in my hydraulic system?

A:Any non-detergent SAE 20W-50 "Motor Oil" is recommended. Clean the area around the reservoir fill neck before removing the cap. Check this level daily. The baffle in the tank, visible thru the reservoir fill opening, should be covered by oil. DO NOT use "hydraulic oil", i.e.; Type A, UDT, or any other form of oil intended for hydraulic cylinder systems.

Page 29 of the manual for the Hornets calls for 20W40 oil. No mention of it being non-detergent. I would have to say that someone got their FAQ's wrong.

Motor oil is commonly used in hydraulic systems. If I were you, I would just go and buy a jug of Shell's Rotella T 20W40 and top up your system. Rotella has a very high rating.

My error. I meant 20W50 wherever I mentioned 20W40. Rotella comes in that grade too.

I think multi-grade oils are non-detergent. I've never heard of a multi-grade detergent not-detergent oil.

I think that the Hornet manual has a "text error" If the decal referred to by bill kapaun is to be the "gospel", the correct oil would be 20W50 with API rating of "SJ/CD". Both of these ratings are now "obsolete" (according to current API chart) but the oil is "High Detergent" Click the link below to go to the API site. Then click "To view current API Rating System. Ratings SJ & CD have both been superceded. I thinks perhaps someone unintentionally put the word "non" into the manual where the word was supposed to be "high". At any rate, I find no evidence that a "non-detergent, multi-weight" oil exist. I would hope someone could hold the OEM's feet to the fire and get them to divulge what gives with the text in "their" manual.

I goofed on the SJ being "obsolete". SJ is still current. CD is obsolete. (As are my eyes)

Finally received response from manuf:

"You can use any 20w50 oil, the manual called for non-detergent but it was later determined that any 20w50 oil will work great. We do recommend that you do use quality oil such as Valvoline."

Issue resolved.

LOL.... now that is a typical BS response from a manufacturer who is trying not to look stupid. Instead of simply admitting that they made an error in putting "non-detergent oil" in the FAQ's section, they sling a fresh load of crap in your direction.

If it had been me asking them to clarify the oil recommendation, I would have pushed the "puppet" at the other end into stating the brand/s of non-detergent multi-grade oil that they initially approved for use in their hydro's. And since s/he actually named a "quality oil such as Valvoline", my next question would have been... "oh, ok... so which oil brands out there are NOT quality brands so I know what not to use?". I'd sure like to hear the response to that question.

castoff, it's not too late for you to do that, providing you don't mind slipping into a character role. The other thing about the OEM's cover up is the fact that the "oil spec sticker" shown in the same manual clearly states "SJ/CD" rated oil, which is high detergent. Now, if they put that information on the oil spec applique and affixed it to all the production machines covered by that manual, that means they already knew that high detergent oil was suitable before printing the manual. In effect they "blew" their own cover up story before they ever told it.

Perhaps someone else can make that phone call as I will likely be AWOL from this list until the mid-point of July.

non detergent 20w-50 is for aircraft engines. check an aviation-related lube supplier or order from the internet.
