sweet potato, lilac: can you plant lasagna-style?

Anybody grown either sweet potato or lilac in a lasagna bed? I know these are two very different plants -- I'm thinking of two different spots on my property, not the same bed! Also, these would be newly constructed lasagna beds -- all the ones I made last fall are already dedicated to other uses.

On the lilacs: Last weekend I planted two cherry trees, non-lasagna style ... which meant two solid days of digging up the super rocky soil of our Catskill mountaintop, at times resorting to chisel and hammer to break up the rocks. If that's what I have to do to plant lilacs this spring, I'm going to wait a year ... but I'd love to get some going.

Thanks in advance!
