Snapper RER likes old clutch disk

I have an old 30" Hivac Snapper (white handlebars).

It's a Katrina survivor, so every day it works is a gift :)

Question: The old smooth-start clutch disk has chunks missing from its tire - only a thin layer of rubber remains, yet it's pulling fine. I found a new wheel locally for less than ten dollars, so I replaced the old one, feeling pretty good about making the old timer better. The surprise is that the new wheel slips! After only a few hours, the center opening in the new wheel has actually been pounded out to larger diameter. I compared to the old wheel, which does have about a quarter-inch play, but seems to have no problem.

Any ideas why the nice new rubber clutch tire is not as effective as the almost-gone old one?

Is this a machine formerly owned by another individual or are you the original owner. If you got the machine second hand, the previous owner (or a tech) might have adjusted the drive disc (flat disk on engine crankshaft) downward, or closer to the rubber tired driven disc in an attempt to correct slipping due to wear at some point in history. You can go to the Snapper website and click on "Publications", then fill in the form with model # etc. from your machine and download a free PDF service manual that gives clear instructions on setting the drive disc to the correct distance from the underside of the frame. If someone had it set the drive disc too far down before, when you installed the new driven disc it has too much "crush" on it and the tire will squish out and fail quickly.

You need to check and see if your old disc has the fibre lining on the inside of the disc, which I am sure it
does, and take it out and put it in the new disc.
It is a tight fit in the inside diameter, and easy to overlook.

Never measured one but I would say yes, well actually it is only going to take up 1/8" in one direction, 1/4" if you slide it back and forth, but if it has the Soft Start Clutch as I described it, that is likely your problem. You never mentioned the Snapper series you have. Is yours the older model with the handle bars or newer with a steering wheel? You may be able to go to the Snapper site and get an owners & parts manual, IÃ¢ÂÂm not sure if a service manual is there. http://www.snapper.com/us/en/support/manuals As mentioned, I owned one many years ago so my memory is not clear any longer on how it functions. When I sold it I gave the new owner the owners manual and repair manual so I'm unable to reference them. I recall there was a clutch spring adjustment that had three position holes, you may try to move it to another hole to reduce the spring tension. This may be causing your problem if the incline is too steep. Lastly you can always try to move the disk drive up towards the engine to reduce the pressure being put on the rubber wheel. It may be out of specs (3 3/4 to 3 7/8) but worth a try. Since you're at 3 7/8 try 3 3/4, if that doesn't work try 3 5/8 or less. Hopefully your new disk is still useable.

Ooops! I left out the dimension spec. The machine needs to be standing on the rear bumpers to do this. Using a ruler or stiff tape measure resting on the flat part of frame (next to where the round hole for engine entry is), to the edge of drive disc face (the face closest to you while you're down there)there should be a maximum of 3 and 13/16' to a minimum of 3 and 3/4". If the measurement you find is more than 3 and 13/16", someone has tried to compensate for wear by moving the drive disc closer to the rubber tired driven disc. There are 2 allen head set screws in the crank pulley (3/16" allen wrench) that need to be loosened in order to adjust the setting of the drive disc. Tap the drive disc gently with small hammer to move it after the set screws are loose. If you download or view the service manual you can look a picture of the procedure.
