Just a curiosity about bare roots

Just a curiosity about bare roots. I know very well it is too late now for bare root roses, far too late.

But what-if? I mean, what would happen to bare root roses planted now? would they die? would they start blooming in winter and then be killed by the frost? would they just remain brown and dead untile next spring?

Silly question, I know. But I'm curious.

No, many people still plant bareroots into late spring, but you have to be careful. The issue is keeping the canes moist do they don't dehydrate and dry out. So, try if you want to, keep the canes mounded with moist soil or a brown paper bag with a hole torn out of the bottom.

And "brown and dead" is a dead bareroot. Bareroot canes should always be plump and green and moist.

hi! I am in the same zone as you. Although earlier planting is preferable you can still plant now with some babying. In fact I just planted 2 bareroots today. (I lost two roses to canker/winter damage and so I replaced them). I have planted them successfully as late as June, but that was difficult to get them to break dormancy.

I usually just cut out any damage, soak for 24 hours, plant and spray the canes several times a day with a water bottle until leaves form. Good luck!

I have no idea about the pics, though blog.com has a reputation for a lot of down-time. Thanks for letting me know! If you click again another time, hopefully it will work better. Hard to complain much about a free thingie, so I won't. Sorry it frustrated you! The pics here are of a diff plant, but the very same principle. " I am wondering if there's a way to have loose airy soil that that also have enough nutrients without frequent fertilizing." Generally yes, a bigger pot/more volume of soil mix. I would forego the styro & compost. The styro will just cause you to need to water (and repot) more often. Fertilizer is much more efficient at delivering nutrients in a pot which is not a large enough environment for the natural decomposition process to appropriately sustain/fortify plants. Also, as decomposition happens, the result is tiny, water-logged, airless particles (mud.) More about soil/watering. A Dracaena grows so slowly, an occasional dose of weak fertilizer should be more than enough even in the leanest (nutritionally) mix. The mix you described, or any with 30% compost would be too dense for my confidence. The goal of a coarser, grittier mix is to eliminate tiny particles of any type, peat, sand, clay, silt. Think moist particles that have some tiny air spaces between them so there is also oxygen, even when saturated to capacity. It's going way beyond my area of experience to give you a specific recipe since I break the rules I espouse but there are a glut of discussion here about this. I would follow the advice established in those. It gets perpetuated because it works well for so many people/plants. There is a pic of such a mix here, in post dated Wed, Oct 20, 10 at 9:45.

R_N: Bare root trees and shrubs are not necessarily supposed to show up at the time of last frost (it's ~ 6 weeks before that here). It's fine to plant a dormant plant/tree now even with temps going well below freezing. But not if they've already begun putting out leaves and shoots. This is about the time I generally receive and plant bare root fruit trees, and it has worked out well, as almost all of them were received still dormant. The problem with these blackberries is they have started growing already. Something that the local berry plants are not doing yet; they barely have started swelling their buds.

Prairie Moon, I wouldn't soak the roots for a day In fact, I wouldn't soak them at all. Just keep the roots moist, and the plants in a cool place, and plant tomorrow. Earlier this spring I received some strawberry plants that were in transit for about a week. I kept them in the refrigerator for another 3 or 4 days before planting. Ended up losing about 10%.

A bit unclear.. you covered the bare soil between the rows of plants with straw right? Don't cover the new plants, just snug the fresh mulch up close to them. All you have to do now is keep the soil moist and watch them grow. You may be better off putting your leaves and clippings into your compost pile since it will take some time for them to decompose enough to be of any use to the strawberries. The aged horse manure worked into the soil before planting will probably give them enough nourishment for this year.

If I get a bareroot late in the season I just pot it up in a container so that I can move it around and keep it in the shade if/when necessary. That is especially helpful if it is really hot outside. Keep it watered and be sure to mist the canes a couple of times daily until it has completely broken dormancy. Come winter time just leave it in it's pot and stick it in an unheated garage or shed to wait out the cold weather. Be sure to water it a few times though. Then next Spring you can transplant it from the pot to where you want it in the garden.

I planted two yesterday:) But in the ground. It isn't super hot here though and at this point of spring I am out in the yard/garden daily and will keep the canes misted until they start leafing out.

I have a friend who lives in the greater Fresno area one about this time last year. For her it was super late. She did as John said and while it took time it did leaf and bloom last summer.
