NIU Shootings

Hello to all my friends on the ws forum.

Although I haven't been posting much this season, I have still been lurking and enjoying all the topics. I just wanted to let all of you know that NIU is where I am pursuing my PhD. I am also teaching 2 genetics labs. I was just entering the the parking deck when the shootings occurred. As I pulled out of the deck, the streets had already been blocked by police cars. I was probably one of the last cars allowed to leave DeKalb before they locked the campus down. I had to drive for almost 20 miles before I found out what happened. I really thought that there had been another terrorist attack, maybe aimed at colleges and universities.

To make a long story very short, I am asking all of my good friends here to keep the NIU family in your thoughts and prayers. One of my students was in the lecture hall at the time of the shooting. He escaped unharmed but I am sure highly traumatized. We don't know when classes will resume or how many student will opt to not return. It has been a truly shocking and cruel experience that I thought could never happen to our isolated school "in the cornfields of Illinois".

So today the shock has finally worn off and I realize that I, as well, could use the support of all my friends. I am now fearful to be on campus at night and am pondering whether to continue on. Wonderful people, like my ws buddies, will help to keep me sane during this tough time. Thanks to all of you for being who you are. I appreciate each and every one of you.

Hi Cheryl -

I was saddened by the story on the news. When I see a post from a cyber-friend after a tragedy, it makes the world seem so small and as if the tragedy happened in my own back yard.

I cannot imagine how you must be feeling being a part of this incident and knowing people who personally witnessed what happened. I think that it is something you must go through to obtain a true understanding.

Have you contacted NIU about the counseling they are offering? They have top-notched specialists that come to help you work through this type of traumatizing event. A group meeting is very beneficial because you can actually talk with people feeling the same anxieties you are experiencing. You'll find that is not uncommon. If you don't get a chance to express your feelings and work them out it can have a lasting effect on you, which you don't need as a part of your life.

A year after 9/11 folks were finding they needed to get counseling for post traumatic stress syndrome and just got signed up for help. These weren't only the people that witnessed the event but all over the country.

I'm sure a lot of what you are going through is just a part of the grieving process which takes time to lessen. Time is the only medicine when grief is involved.

As far as your personal safety, IMHO, I feel that everyone around you will have a sense of 'high alert' and will watch out over one another like they have never done before. NIU should be instituting heightened security measures to help all of you feel more secure and protected. If you need to be there after hours, the buddy system is a wonderful tool. If there isn't a security guard on hand, just having a girlfriend to walk with relieves so much of the stress.

Hi Cheryl,

I was so emotionally moved by your letter,i only live abour 20 min.away from NIU,we were glued to the T.V.,like every one else,you are so right, we just never thought we would have such a tragic thing happen,as you said, "In the corn fields of Il." What can a person say in times such as this?There really are no words,i hope you are talking to some one,Shimla had some good advice,it will take you a long time to recover from something so devistating.

I can only offer you encouragement to keep up your studies,it seems you have come so far,it would be a shame to let 'The shooter'stop, yet another person from living life to it's fullest.You have so much to thankful for that you were able to get out of there.I am so sorry for the great pain this has caused so many of you.

Thw last thing i did before i fell asleep that night was to say a prayer for all of you,we do not know each other,but yet we do,all hearts are joined by love,and you should never feel you are alone, please talk to some one soon.We are all here for you also,any time you need to YELL,we will listen.

We are now veiled in Martie's clouds after a downright cerulean morning. "Weather" is definitely movin' in for tonight/tomorrow. I haven't listened to a forecast closely, but I the worst I expect is MAYBE some heavy snow early on quickly changeing to sleet and then to rain. The makins of a pretty gross day, in all liklihood! But I'll be inside painting so I don't really care that much. Good excuse to play with, cuddle (theraputically beat) a little dog, 'bug. (Do they dock the tails of Bouviers, 'bug?). The stageing held! I put the first coat of ceiling blue on the little part of ceiling over the 1st. floor door to the stairwell. I put the first coat of wall color on the remaining half of the north wall, the entire stairwell, and the remaining part of the east wall. As well as a third coat on the outlet, switch, cable, telephone covers. I've cleaned all the rollers, pans, and brushes. And I'm rewarding myself with a "wicked treat"... Hot Pastrami, with onions, ans swiss cheese. MMM-mmm! Helpmeet is a bit downcast, not having accomplished all he'd hoped; he's showered and headed down to the local eatery for a cold beer, some vittles, and some sports on HDTV. :) Martie, you story reminds me of a guy we used to see on the beach some years ago. He had a Saluki; beautiful dog! The acceleration "off the line" was simply amazing and it reminded me of a Cheetah... you know, how the spine really flexes with each leap. Anyway, that dog went nuts over a frisbee. Guy would throw it, dog would look at him, and run it down once released. Other dogs didn't stand a chance, UNLESS it landed in the water. Truly something to behold doing what he'd been bred to do. Your floral assortment is beautiful and thoughtful. I have a grocery store bouquet that arrived with my box of chocolates... all in pinks, reds. whites. I found some very nice chocolate (dark with a candied, edible flower on it, and milk chocolate cupid from an antique mould) and a humorous card for the helpmeet. Every single Valentine's Day he brings me something. Valentine's Day was Mum's favorite holiday (right up there with Easter; her baskets were a joy to behold). I wonder if Jerri will share some sentimental anecdote about her parents? I found those particularly fun and meaningful (in case you hadn't guessed). Just as I was leaving the garage to clean up the equipment I saw a guy with a dog waving to me. I waved right back and called out to him. His dog is a Labradoodle and he lives a few doors south of our home. He said he sees me all the time with Rex, and would love to stop by when I didn't have my hands full. We have several "new" neighbors and it will be fun to meet one more of them. It's important to know who to call when you need a cup of dog chow or when a dog goes AWOL (absent with out leash). ;) Drema, it's so nice to hear from you. I know you've had a lot on your plate, too. I like the way you've decided to "roll with it". Sometimes the simplest plants offer the most interesting colors... I'm a sucker for foliage, anyway, so anytime it offers up multiple colors I'm impressed. How sweet of you to "take Charlie" and give them a night out... . (another Mum anecdote: she used to take 5-6 yr. olds for an afternoon so a young mother could have some time to herself. She said it was easy to just sit and read stories and chatter for a few hours on a Saturday or Sunday.). More I want to say, but I've forgotten it by now. !

Its a little young to plant in ground. You might be better off having a potted backup,a second coco. Its in full sun...but they need a lot of warmth..warm soils. The NBC has for years thrived on that asphalt and concrete AND brick wall all boosting temps for a warmer growing season..maybe near all year. SO much room for experiment...even putting black plastic around it..mesh maybe,too absorb warmth. Here in 10a bay area? 10f too cold at night in winter..and that's just average. Mid 30's for a week or two per winter take them out even if no frost.

Latest new report says the shooter had been a graduate student, but was not enrolled for this semester. The same report said he had two pistols and a shotgun, but had used only one of the pistols. The police has recovered only one of the pistols - whereabout of the other pistol is unknown at this writing. One report said one of the pistols was a Glock. One of the wounded, taken to the hospital, has died. Other Information: Northern Illinois University is at DeKalb, IL. Normal Ill. Univ. is much farther south at Bloomington/Normal, IL. After the state of ILlinois was organized, about 5 teacher colleges were established scattered over the state. These were to produce teachers for grammar (grades 1-8) schools, or Normal schools. One of these was the teacher college at Normal, IL; another was at Charleston, IL. That was many years ago, and today, a number of those colleges have grown into Universities. The town of DeKalb, IL is named after Baron DeKalb, a mercinary who fought on the side of the new United States against Great Britian in the Revolutionary War. Baron DeKalb, as he called himself, was German born and a soldier for hire living in France. He came with Lafaette and his armada of ships when Lafaette came to the aid of George Washington. DeKalb was presented to Congress and given a title of Brigdier General and immediatly sent off to war. DeKalb did not live long thereafter; He was killed in an military engagement. A monument was errected in his honor, the only foreign national so honored in that war. Baron DeKalb was not a real Baron by royal decree. It was a title that he gave himself since he believed that he deserved this title owning to military services that he had performed. The neighbors in my Nextdoor forum advised to NEVER CLICK on a link sent by a stranger. If I want to do transfer money through Zelle, I go to my bank's website, rather than the link provided by the seller (a scammer). That's how someone got scammed by using the faked link to Zelle provided by the seller, stealing $300 from the buyer. Below are from my Nextdoor forum: "Never Ever sign up for something through a link sent from someone. You sign up for Zelle, not the other way around. I had a similar situation through Face Book Marketplace that they wanted me to pay them through Paypal but use the link they sent me. On FB someone is renting a 3 bedroom 2 bath home for $1K. They require a deposit and first month. Here is the scam. We rent this apt through AirBNB, and they will forward you a link to follow to send them the money. I knew was a scam so I played along. I reported to FB. It's unfortunate, but I have reported more than 20 accounts to Facebook, and they do nothing. Even some of those accounts that are selling newer cars for $1,500 with a Neme like "Mike Rogers" a white fellow, when you look at their friends and pictures, is in reality someone from India, Pakistan, Zimbawe... etc. Never ever click a link from an unknown email, text, or solicitation. Venmo is another method people use to steal your money. It's not like the bank or even PayPal where you can dispute a charge. Never EVER open a link someone has forwarded you. If you need to sign up for something, go directly to the biz page yourself and sign up. You can usually hover over the link itself to see the web address or if you do click on it, you can see the actual address it sent you to is not legit, even if the page looks to be." I just had someone try the scam on me. They said that they sent me $400 via Zelle but I needed to click on a link in the email to increase my Zelle limit to $700 then I would just send them back $300. I called him out on it and he stopped responding. This guy's name is Kayden Light. Beware folks! Scammers are out in full force now." The above are reports from my Nextdoor forum in my Chicago suburb.

Hi, Cheryl. I have been thinking about you and hoping that you have had an opportunity to talk about your anxiety with a counselor or a group of people from your college that have also found this traumatic. The advice above sounds good to me.

I have appreciated your postings and helpful suggestions in the past. Please know that I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

It is a horrible feeling to work in an environment where you don't feel safe. I completely understand where you are coming from. My city is big, but small at the same time. We now have a serial rapist/murderer on the loose and everyone is a bit frightened. I go to school where he preys, and we stick in large groups, or have campus security escort us to our cars. I work a block away from where the last victim's body was found, and once again have a co-worker or customer walk me out to my car. It can be a frightening world at times. It definately makes communities pull together and watch each other's backs though. It is kind of sad that it takes something really bad to happen in order to see the good in others.
My advice to you, talk to those you trust about how you feel. Don't keep it bottled inside. Remain cautious on campus, and don't be afraid to ask someone to escort you somewhere. Also....if you LOVE teaching, please don't give it up. A good teacher is extremely hard to find, and even if the pay is not good, your hard work is definately appreciated by your community.

hi cheryl, we always keep praying about the safety of the schools and campuses. i worry so much about them. i took my kids out one of the reasons is for that, even though we live in a tiny town i still worry, one day it will happen at our school, and i don't want my children to be there when it does. so i started homeschooling them. it has been threatened twice in the neighboring town also small. and they've had lockdown several times last year at this school because of threats according to my son and no parents were told. how safe am i supposed to feel that we were not told??
makes me think and know, what is this world coming to anymore??
i pray for the family's losses and their psychological stuff that those people are gonna go thru that were in the vicinity. its crazy!! but i am thankful not more were hurt. its crazy that i don't know any of them but i feel that way.
a serial rapist/murderer? geez. i am so glad i live in a farming community!! this town has probably 200 at the very most and they are all spread out. maybe 100 of us live in town. the worst ya have to worry about is if someone;s dog gets into your trash or people walking thru your yard. occasionally ya hear of someone's house getting broke into. and here peopel actually sleep with their doors open sometimes. geez not me!! mines locked all the time, living in the city toooooo long and to many scary movies!! LOL
