Yep, overfilling will do that. When the oil level is too high, the crankshaft will strike the oil (sometimes that only occurs when the machine "leans" a certain way) and "whip the oil into a frothy cloud" inside the crankcase. Some of this oil mist cloud will be drawn through the crankcase breather into the intake and be burned, some of it (to a lesser degree) can find it's way past the oil control rings on the piston(s) and be burned. Drain or suction the oil to the correct level and you should quit smoking. I cringe when I hear of so called "trained personell" make this kind of mistake because then I begin wondering what else they don't know. Unless you continue to run it in this condition, I doubt you will suffer any lingering problems.

Thanks!!!! I was tryign to see a "trend" when this happened, and it *is* when the mower leans... I just had ASSUMED he filled the oil to the right level. The tech seemed very knowledgeable, I suppose he was just a little sloppy when he put the oil in. I think he left me an unemtied bottle of oil, so Im wondering how he got too much into there, maybe it takes less thana bottle and he still put too much. At any rate, Ill get some of that oil out, or else drain it and replace it carefully with the exact amount per the manual...

I don't know which engine this machine has (some other forum members might know and post the EXACT oil capcity) but a great number of engines require something greater than 1 quart but less than 2 quarts (such as 1 and 1/4 quarts or 1 and 1/2 quarts). I suppose this can lead to "guesstimation" errors if an exact measuring device or a "sight line" on the oil bottle isn't used, or if the correct capacity isn't known. Another way that the oil can be set to the wrong level is by incorrect use of the dipstick oil gauge (if so equipped). I myself always thought that the only correct way to use the dipstick was to seat the stick all the way down, even if that required screwing it all the way down. I have since been re-educated by members of this forum that SOME engine OEMs instruct you to "only touch the dipstick to the dipstick tube" when checking the oil instead of seating it completely. I just tossed that in as another thing to check out as to how the tech might have overfilled your engine.

Is there a chance he didn't change the filter (forgot maybe), and then added the recommended amount of oil? That would leave a decent amount of old oil in the system. Does the oil look clean?

My understanding is that USA engines you have the screw down, Japanese engines you just touch on top.

That is the lesson I was given when I made my faux pas on this forum. I'm thankful for it though. I have yet to work on one of the "touch top of tube" brands but if I do, I have been warned.

Rc Moser never trusts anybody when it comes to fluid levels on his equipment, Especially Dealships, or anybody down the mechincal food chain. WHY???? IT"S NOT THERE EQUIPMENT! and they will never amit two hours, two days, or two months later that they over or under filled or left the filter or drain plug loose. You have to double check everything you have paid for services and check it before they leave. The problem occurs when people don't know, so they have to trust them, this is the ones that get ripped off and suddenly have unrelated failures. S**T just don't happen, there is a cause somewhere.

Problem solved - took some oil out, down to level it should be, and no smoke. It was defintely overfilled with oil. The oil that drained looked a little dirty, I have no idea what this guy did - the oil on the dipstick looked clean...

alittle bit of old oil residue settles at the bottom of the crankcase, so not unusual for initial oil drained out of the drain pipe to look dirty even after an oil change. IMO thats why it looks clean on the dip stick, it's suspended in the clean new oil. glad you got it fixed. I bet you'll do a follow up check from now on.

I only trust me or the Kubota dealer to put fluid in my BX2200, and since I do all my own maintenance and the tractor has not been back to the dealer, I guess I only trust myself.

Now there is one smart Kubota man!!!! I bet that thing will run for ever!??!?!

Yes, I will defintely check next time. In the end analysis, it was I would estimate about 4 oz. too much oil. It holds, with the filter, 3.5 pints (what an annoying unit of measurement) so being off just a little does make a difference. 4 ounces out of 56 ounces is about 7%....

And this overage didnt matter on flat ground, or tilting to the left or to the right, it seemed that the overage made a difference on downhills (I have a relatively flat yard, only in a couple of spots are there slopes).

So - take that as a data point, and any future problem with someone else, hopefully they will search and find this.
