John Deere iTorque engine? where's Kawasaki?

In looking at the middle of the line John Deere mower models (x500), I'm noticing that they appear to have gone from Kawasaki engines toward their own JD brand of engines.

Does John Deere actually make the engine?

As I continued to search for the answer, I have found certain listings written as such:

"V-twin, air-cooled John Deere iTorqueÃ¯Â¿Â½ Power System by Kawasaki"

Hopefully, this means that Kawasaki makes all John Deere engines labelled as "iTorque"

Sounds like a consortium effort by John Deere, Kawasaki, and Apple :^)

Scott, I'm not sure about the 235, but my 225 did not come with an hour meter. I had to install it (even though the cutout was there in the frame). Just because it shows less than 100 hours doesn't mean it was installed since new. Also, even if it were, they're pretty easy to replace. While "rolling back" a car's odometer will get you in hot water, I don't think the sheriff cares much about guys selling lawn mowers with bogus hours. That being said, check other things for signs of wear. With less than 100 hours, they should both be in like new condition. The only wear you should see is some paint scraped off the sides of the deck. If you see excessive wear on the tires, pedals, seat, lots of play in the steering, noisy deck bearings, etc, those are some things that might make you question the low hours claim. If you decide that both tractors do in fact have less than 100 hours, and move on from comparing the condition of the tractors to the features of the tractors, it's a no-brainer, the GT is an upgrade. The tractors handle and operate identically, with twin-touch pedals and a manual lift deck. Does the LX have the foot pedal lift? You might prefer than over the hand lever. As far as cutting grass goes, you won't really notice a difference. But if you ever want to branch out from there, the GT235 is a real garden tractor, which is basically a miniature farm tractor. While the LX is one of the more rugged lawn tractors, capable of pushing a snow blade, it's still just a lawn tractor. You'll never use sleeve-hitch attachments (plow, disc harrow, cultivator, planter, blade, box blade, rake) or a tiller (which are cheap on eBay). And if you tow a cart full of firewood, soil, mulch, whatever, you'll need to take it easy on the transmission.

If, the 80 PSI was an accurate value, that would be lower than the threshold for a "good engine". But, to be "accurate", a compression test must be done after an engine has been run and warmed completely to normal operating temperature. The throttle plate must also be in the wide open position during the test. Whether the engine features a compression release, or not, also determines the usefulness of a "cranking compression test", even on a warm engine and WOT plate. So, I guess you need to post some engine model and other numbers before deciding the engine has low compression based on what you have done thus far. A "cylinder leakage test" using compressed air is often the best way to tell for sure if the cylinder is "tight" or not and where it is losing pressure (if it's not "tight).

If......gasoline is in the crankcase, it's not that a vacuum is created when the air filter is in place drawing out the gas/oil mix. Gasoline in the lube oil begins to vaporize out of the oil ( as soon as the piston and cylinder begin to warm, which is almost instantly upon start up) and creates its own specific pressure as it does so. This specific pressure will vent of its own volition without any partial vacuum being applied. What is actually happening is that when the air filter is installed, is that the venting gasoline vapors are confined inside the confined space created by the air filter and since the gases are coming out of the crankcase vent under pressure..........mostly what enters the carb is a fuel rich mixture with very little air because with a pressure fed source inside the air filter, there is no way for sufficient air to be drawn through the filter media to make a proper air/fuel ratio. Another phenomenon that may plague engine air filters during cold ambient air temps is air filter icing. In humid conditions with ambient air temps near or below the freezing point of water, ice can form on the filter media and cause drastic clogging. This is why most engine driven snow blowers/throwers do not feature an air filter. Both the fine mist of snow particles and the high water vapor content (from snow contacting engine and exhaust surfaces) produce conditions which are perfect for air filter icing.

JD and Kawasaki have partnered for quite a while ion the upmarket JD garden class tractors.

I believe the reference to the iTorque is to recognize the latest class of Kawasaki engines which meet the latest EPA requirements in 2011.

If you go the the JD web site anf punch up the operator manual for the 2011 X500 it clearly shows:

Engine - iTorque Power System
X500, X530 and X534

Engine Make: Kawasaki

Model Number: FS730V

Bore 78 mm (3.07 in.)

Stroke 76 mm (2.99 in.)

Displacement 726 cm3 (44.3 cu in.)

Cylinders V-Twin

Cooling Air Cooled

You can Google the model # FS730V and look up anything you want to know about the engine.

Thanks for the added info.

I'm trying to convince myself that I'll be ok with the base x500 model...rather than one of the 2000 series tractors. I'll just hire out the kinds of work that I might need (lots of fence post holes, some clearing of trees, etc.)

So are these Kawasaki made FS730V engines well regarded by those who know about these things???

I'll simply say this... among all the brands of residential lawn and garden tractor there is no manufacturer who warrants their products for anywhere near as long as JD warrants the Select Series (X3xx, X5xx, and X7xx) which use Kawasaki engines although there are some diesel X7xx models.

Also, you will rarely see any other manufacturer using the same class Kawasaki engines in their products as JD uses. May be a contractual thing or it may be that those engines cost more... who knows ;)
