Sabre 2554HV Lawn Tractor

I've just recently purchased a Sabre 2554HV with the 25 HP Kohler v Twin OHV engine from a friend at church.The mower is not currently running I may even need to rebuild or replace the motor.I dont have any experience with JD products , where would I purchase parts for this critter ? Using a 6 year old craftsman zero turn at present and its limping a long " Barely ". Purchased the Sabre with a 54 inch deck and snowblower at a very reasonable price. Any information, thoughts, or concerns are very much appreciated.

I have a 1999 16/46 hydro Sabre by John Deere. I still love mowing with mine, I get my parts at Mississippi Engines, Jackson, Mississippi. A John Deere dealership. I really haven't needed very many parts, belts, a muffler, starter, and a new deck shell. I bought an e-manual on ebay. The manual was one of the smartest ideas I've ever come up with.

You can get Kohler parts for JD at any Kohler dealer. You can go to Kohlers website and sign into the parts under
"enter as Guest", you will need the Model and Type numbers from the engine decal to look up any parts you need.

If you go to JD's site you can still luck up parts as well but those will only have the JD part numbers listed.

Try lowering the pressure in your tires a little. Also, try to fit as large of a beanbag onto the seat as you're comfortable operating the tractor with (no, I don't mean one of those big ones you find in someone's living room!) - beanbags have a lot of cushioning effect - boaters use them when operating in choppy waters. Just make sure that you can easily reach all controls while on the beanbag, and realize that your CoG will be slightly higher. Another technique is to slow down a little. That tends to remove a lot of jerkiness of these little tractors. You could also try smoothing out your lawn, but that is much easier said than done (can't just drag a barrel full of water over it!). Otherwise, google "lawn tractor suspension seat" and you'll find some, prolly around $500 for anything decent.

I wouls suggest some of the following Brands to look at The John Deere LA100 series LA145 w/48inch deck $1,999 The Cub Cadet 1000 series 1050 w/50inch deck $1,999, Sears yard tractors a DYS4500 w/48inch deck for about $1,799 a husqvarna YTH2348 w/48inch deck for $1,799 at sears. all of them are mulch and bagger capable. My Grandfather who is 90 years old uses a John Deere Sabre15/42 which is simalar to the JD LA series and it is easy for him to get on and off and manuver around his yard and he is able to remove the full bags off his bagger with no problems. All tractor listed are hydrostatic transsmissions with foot pedal control and all have a walk thru design. Hope this help you with a Tractor. So let me ask ... What is wrong with the lawn chief - is it something(s) that is simply going to be cost prohibitive to fix ? Compared to laying down $2,$3,$4k down on a new tractor with a blade (or snow blower attachment). After all - you already have the blade (or snow blower attachment). Thats not going to be cheap to replace with a new ride. You may also wish to factor in, with regards to buying used there is a 50/50% chance that your going to be repairing someone else's problem(s) on an already expensive purchase. Even if its the motor that's non-repairable - with a little hunting you could still easily replace the motor somewhere around $300-$700 ... Plus fix a few other things that might be broken or near worn out ? If yours is fixable at good price (compared to the $4k new option) then why not fix it? Some (a lot) of the box store units are not going to survive your routine (at least like your lawn chief did). Fix the lawn chief ? Whats wrong with it ? either way - good luck to you.

I am currently looking at a sabre 2554hv riding mower a man has he wants to sale it needs the carb cleaned and blade spindle bearings and the right head light i didnt know what to offer he said 200 so should i jump at it run away or is that about right and a reasonable price idk because after working on a golf course that had all john deers i got turned away from them dew to all the problems and work they required so i didnt know what would be a good price or if thier good mowers or not and every sight i have been to has either been all about them or all bout saying stay away thier total junk so thoughts please

I know that you can get parts for John Deere tractors at any John Deere authorized dealers. I have been able to walk in and have the part handed to me for my JD LT-155 that is about 15 years old.

Since as I understand Saber is a John Deere under a different name plate it should be the same as for the JD tractors.

For your tractor enter the model number in the box in the upper left part of the screen.

As for cost, I have found that parts through the authorized dealers are less than the same parts through a big box store.

I have year 2000 Scotts 2048 rider. I buy parts from Green parts store. Since Scotts was made by JD, they sell parts. I guess they will do the same for Sabre riders as well. See the link attached. www.greenpartstore.com/
