desert willow smells terrible
Comments (19)I've always noticed the smell of these trees in Phoenix. Walking at night, I can always tell when there's a desert willow around. The variety here are mostly the light pink flower variety and they give off this pungent astringent sour dusty wood smell. It isn't the flowers but the tree itself, I remember my parents having this Xmas decoration made from a strong smelling wood that smells exactly like this tree. It's not the most pleasant smell but it's not bad in the background, smells like the desert....See MoreChilopsis linearis, Desert Willow in San Jose?
Comments (8)Chilopsis love heat and sun, and is also quite happy with water in summer if it also has good drainage. Just be sure you won't mind the messy winter appearance of this tree, as the retained seed heads and rather disorderly branching of this tree are not something I find attractive to look at when out of leaf. If you don't get regular summer temps above 755 to 80F where you are, this is a rather shy bloomer. To my mind, a nice Fremontodendron hybrid or a Cercis occidentalis are more attractive choices. Regarding the Chitalpa, this is a very long blooming tree, but the flowers don't tend to be as showy from a distance as some other long blooming trees, the flowers are more subtle than a Jacaranda or Catalpa, for example, and tend to be less vividly colored than the Chilopsis. One aesthetic advantage of the xChitalpa over the Chilopsis, is that being a sterile hybrid, it doesn't have the messy seed pods. If you have your heart set on a particular color of bloom with the Desert Willow, buy a named cultivar or select it when it is in bloom....See MoreHAVE: Desert Willow Tree (chilopsis linearis)
Comments (0)Desert Willow Tree (chilopsis linearis) - also called Desert Catalpa, Flowering Willow or Mimbre I have six hard wood cuttings rooted in floral wet foam that are about 5-6 inches tall. Am looking to trade for rooted Baby Bonnet (coursetia axillaris). If you have this bush to trade please post here. There is a photo of the Desert Willow on my member page or you can check out the link below for a close up of a flower.
