Happy Arbor Day! Anyone planting a tree today in commemoration?

My daughter turned 7 this morning, and after she opened her presents she asked to plant a tree today for Arbor Day. The look on my husband's face was hilarious! We're going to take a drive to the local nursery and see what we can find..Hopefully it's not too late in our season to plant..

Anyone else planting today to mark the occasion of Arbor Day?

Great present! It is too late here as well - each state has it's own state level (seasonally appropriate) Arbor Day and Georgia's is the third Friday in FEBRUARY. April is too hot.

CPTK, if I send $10 bucks to an organization who is to sell me a tree, I expect a tree that will live and grow in my yard. Their mission sucks if you get a twig with no root system, if you aren't gonna get a tree that'll live their mission needs improving. This guy could've sent his money out to another nursery, and got a good quality tree, and when you say Dawg, you should be Randy Jackson, or what ever his name is from "The voice" or the dude who is in the commercial judging dogs now. But, anyway, Arbor Day should be teaching their field diggers of trees to dig deeper and keep a good portion of roots on their seedlings that people are buying with their hard earned money. Evidently they are not teaching their tree diggers correctly if they aren't leaving enough roots on their seedlings for them to be planted and live in the yards of their supporters who buy their trees. Neilnokoma 32, didn't say that a bunny, deer or who knows what ate their trees, they didn't grow! Now, if Neilnokoma32, says they had a good root system when planted, then I am wrong.

Yes, I planted several. I spent the day at the elementary school educating the kids about Arbor Day (although they know the answers, we do this every year) and handing out seedlings to them. This year's seedling was Wax Myrtle. The kids were extra thrilled because this tree is evergreen so it has leaves now. Usually we give them dormant deciduous trees like maple, dogwood, etc. We gave out over 500 trees and I planted some of the extras when I got home. By the way, we get our seedlings in bulk from the Georgia Forestry Commission and this year we got some beauties. We paid $240 for 600 seedlings and some were big enough to put in 3 gallon pots. You can order in quantities as low as 10, but the unit price is higher. Check out the link and click on "Seedlings" from the menu bar. The media doesn't give Arbor Day nearly enough press! How is the average person to know? If only Hallmark would get on board (Happy Arbor Day cards ... hug a tree, this card made from recycled paper, of course). I do believe that local events are continuing here and there through tomorrow. And tree sales should be popping up soon. Autumn Hill Nursery (near me) always has a big tree sale in March. Isn't it? What do you think of the leaves? They are very tiny and variegated. I would have never tried them but my oldest son has a thing for crab apples ever since he was little so two years ago, they collected all different color crab apples at the NY Botanical Garden. The first plants germinated on the day someone we know died so I thought if I got something good, I'd call it "Grace" after her but then I want to get my kids name in there too. So I'd call it Vincent's Grace - not that I have plans of officially releasing a plant. One other plant shows a little variegation, a couple have the small leaf but most have a larger rounder leaf.

Getgoing, love how the sun lights your orchid up. Almost fourescent I have always thought of giving a hand at bougainvillea! Those are beautiful. Everyone has really nice plants here that brighten me up too. Don't forget, they don't have to be in bloom, or rare, or different. They can just be ordinary or something that has sentimental value to you. It makes my Aunts day who is dying of cancer to see a new leaf emerge from her commonly sold Philodendron. In fact, I have one in my bathroom window I starte at for a sec each day as the light hits it. It gets lit up such a bright yellow. I also have a praying plants that almost illuminates as the morning sun hits it. I will snap pics for everyonne to see. I do have well over hundreds of different kinds in which each one has it's own day to brighten up mines. I will pass a few along as time goes by and please as well as you all. I can see why your plants do that for you according to what I see so far above)

A few years ago I started some Blackgum from locally collected seed. As luck would have it, a couple of friends ended up expecting. Their daughter was conceived very close to the time of germination of my seed. That fall I gave them one of the Blackgums in commemoration of new daughter of nearly identical age. Both are doing extremely well. The last couple of years, and they are in a race as to who can grow faster. Now at 2+ y.o., 'Clara' knows that it is HER tree. And mom is loving them growing up together.

Nice story arktrees. If they ever move, have another tree handy for them to plant because that little girl will expect it. :)

I dunno - I kind of like my "green trees".

When I plant a tree, I usually go for fall color. Also, the darker green the leaves are in the summer, the better. I particularly like the Sugar maple selections from New England.

Well, I do have 4 Golden Raintrees, so there will (hopefully) be some color this summer, but I get what you're saying Ken, I have a whole lot of green. I have to say my husband REALLY likes the European Hornbeam Fastigiata's leaves. He didnt find them so interesting when he saw their pictures online, but he's taken a real liking to them, and comments almost every day how good they look. T

I adore the Red Horse Chestnut! I know exactly where to plant 2 next Spring. They're wind tolerant too which is a must for me. We don't live in a wind tunnel but still, I never knew how windy a spot we lived in til I planted my trees. lol

We took our daughter to the local (if you call 30 minutes away local) nursery and their prices were RIDICULOUS. Needless to say we didn't buy anything there.

Every day is Arbor Day!

This year I planted another bald cypress (at my place) and one red maple in an area along the edge of a lot that hasn't been developed -- between that lot and a slew that handles run off and stays damp maybe 1/2 the year.
