Blackjack Oak(Quercus marilandica)

Someone must have some good Blackjack acorns but I havn't had the least luck finding them. Where are they? I have found several nurseries with seedlings but NO acorns and either they won't ship trees to Oregon or want a fortune to do it.

PLEASE does anybody have them?

Unfortunately, a good idea that didn't work.

And, it looks like restrictions related to oak wilt are going to be a problem (at least a cost-related one) for anything other than seeds.

That's a Southern Red Oak (Quercus falcata) The juvenile foliage off young trees and branches is what's in your picture, which looks like a bird foot. The adult leaves of older trees and old branches looks much different.

Your tree is getting some width growth compared to the last pic. The subject of fall color above has me wanting to mention that I have added a Nyssa Sylvatica to my yard, Black Gum or Tupelo tree. They get great fall color or so I've read. I bought 3 by accident. I have 1 in the ground,1 in a pot and 1 is in a raised bed, and I am going to TRY Bonsai with it. I will transplant the potted one this fall. I am not sure where it will go yet. My yard is getting very crowded, I wish I could give it to somebody. I meant to buy only 1 of them. That Regal Prince will get how wide in maturity? About 15 feet? I forget, sorry. My oaks are doing fine, a few have had Japanese Beetles really eat alot of leaves. Like my Q. Velutina. It has had some issues with what LOOKS like "Butt rot" or a fungus type thing at the trunk bottom. I've been using a fungicide on it, and it seems to have healed the original scar. That is the only REALLY decimated tree (Japanese Beetle infestation) in my yard, and, I am guessing because of the Fungus problem making it weaker than all the other trees in my yard. The rest just had some leaves eaten that didn't harm tree. I need to do an update about that tree (the Q. Velutina) on GW BUT, I can't post pics anymore. I had posted and taken a pic or 2 showing the tree wound. I want to do an update, but, I can't. My computer didn't recognize the disk when I put it in my computer. Anyway, enjoy the rest of summer Dmac, I am waiting for Fall, and it's cooler temps, I can't take this 90"s F crap having. Later.

Some trees don't like low humidity and struggle with increased evapotranspiration in semiarid climates. And again, Sunset is your bible and it asserts that zones 18-22 is OK for that plant. I have planted several Q. shumardii in Colo in irrigated turf and they seem to be doing OK thus far - not same plant but similar.

Take solace in the fact that they are ugly trash trees that grow an inches a year and have no fall color and also dull the chainsaw when cut to make room for a better tree.

Dang j0nd03, what did these trees ever do to you? Ever since Bill mentioned it, I've been thinking about adding a few to the collection, myself.

Not everyone wants to stick with lolly-pop tree clones. Dirr says these trees are "certainly worth treasuring".

How about grow incredibly slow. Have extremely dense wood that does dull anything sharp that comes into contact with it (sometimes trees have to be cleared to make room for paths/garden etc). Have no fall color. Pop up everywhere around here. It along with ulmus alata and white and green ash have a ridiculous germination rate around my house. Even the small branches are so firm that a slight brush against my body feels like nails scraping my skin. Very. Ugly. Leaves. Very short for a long time. I would rather have just about any other tree that is growing on my property that the blackjack oak. Heck, even my much disliked ulmus alata displayed a fantastic fall show last year while the blackjack oak either turned brown and fell or fell while turning brown.

Does grow where no oak should be able to grow and does provide acorns for the wildlife as well as other normal tree stuff birds love.

And by the way I have not planted any lollipop trees on my property. I do have one specimen blackjack oak that is about 30 feet tall with very nice form in the open that will never see a chainsaw if that makes you feel any better.

I see them with good fall color sometimes around here, but it varies year to year, they're usually mixed with Turkey Oak and Southern Red Oak in the drier areas.

Like said, an open grown Blackjack can have a pleasing form, but they grow slow.
