Comments (3)Harm is not the operative verb here...it is a question of aesthetics. They will not be 'harmed' but will look awful. Who is making you do this? HOA? City? Public utility? You would honestly likely be better off taking them out and starting again with an appropriately sized plant. The best time to do it is in the middle of the night and hope that no one wakes up in the morning....See MoreCan a Leyland Cypress Tree Grow Under a Black Walnut Tree?
Comments (2)These don't appreciate shade and would be liable to appear even more gloomy and scruffy stuck beneath another tree than they do anyway. Then there is the matter of the visual tension produced by having a conical conifer stabbing up through a deciduous tree (unless the shade is heavy enough to prevent it from growing up through the branches of the walnut much). If you don't require tall plants use broadleaved evergreen shrubs with rounded or spreading growth habits instead of coniferous evergreens. If you require tall plants that will be likely to grow well above the bottom level of walnut branches it would be greatly preferable to have these located behind or beyond the spread of the tree branches....See MoreCan you keep a Leyland Cypress in shrub form?
Comments (17)It is possible to keep them smaller, although this hedge is likely closer to 6-8' than limited to only 4'. And will require a great deal of attention to maintain at that size and condition. One has to wonder at the advisability of planting a tree that naturally wants to grow to 50+ feet (and rapidly at that) and attempting to maintain it long term at only 4'. I agree with Mike that it is probably not worth the effort and that may be even more so the case depending on your location as leylands can have serious disease issues in various parts of the country. Tina, if you can tell us where you are located and exactly what you need this plant (just one or a grouping?) to do for you, perhaps we can suggest alternatives that work better for this purpose than the Leylandii....See More6ft Leyland Cypress trees ok to plant right now?
Comments (8)It's impossible to be precise about watering when the plants remain in a container - it is vastly different from watering plants in the ground. Various factors will come into play - temperature and weather conditions, exposure of the containers to sunlight, the potting medium and how well rooted the plant is in the container. Allow them to dry slightly, then water well - if the water flows out the drainage holes rapidly, then it is likely the plant is quite rootbound or the potting medium is quite chunky and allows rapid drainage. Watering may need to be bumped up under those conditions, as would extreme weather and if the containers remain in full sun. Containerized plants in nurseries typically get watered everyday in summer, at least in my area. While we do not get much in the way of temperature extremes, it does tend to be quite dry and many containered plants are in full sun. Black nursery pots can heat up the soil to high temperatures if in full sun and daily watering is necessary. If you pick a cooler and somewhat overcast day, you can plant now. It just requires some fast work to keep exposed roots to minumum, so plan ahead (prepare planting holes, etc. before unpotting). And careful attention to watering once planted. An alternative is to just hold off until fall, but that is assuming the plants are not rootbound already. Another 4-6 weeks in a container will not make a big difference - growers hold the plants in containers often for many months and with no ill-effects if carefully tended. But that works only if the plant in question is not already rootbound. Slip the rootball carefully from the pot and and examine to determine the current state of affairs....See More- 14 years ago
