B&S 400707 1507-1 Only running on one cyl

Grr - finally found a bagger for my older Craftsman. Haven't even had the chance to use it yet, was driving the mower around front to connect it, and it started 'sounding funny'. Didn't really notice a lack of power, sounded more like a hole suddenly appeard in the muffler - but that wasn't it. Pulled one spark plug wire off, and it stalled. Put it back, re-fired, and pulled the other one off - no change! uh-oh.

Swapped the plugs from side to side, same cyl still not firing. Jiggled wires, no change. Cursed wires, no change. Walked away with it idling, and it went back to running normal for about 30 seconds, then back to 1 cyl. Seems to be getting gas, can't see a spark in the dark on that side (clearly visible on the other side)

Bad coil? magneto? The Leaf Gods don't want me to suck up the leaves?

I'm assuming I can't just swap the wires from left to right side to see if that makes a difference, there would be a timing issue like in a car, right?
