I'd say cook it and eat it or donate it to a homeless shelter if you don't like rice.

If it's past date or has bugs or something, you can go ahead and compost it.

There were a couple of silly stories that cropped up about rice some time back. One was that birds would eat the rice and then since it was dry and uncooked, when they drank water, the rice would expand and they'd explode. The other was something along the lines that white rice would cause their neck muscles to fail and they'd die (or something like that). Both of those stories are nonsense.

Rice is sometimes banned because it can make sidewalks slippery and people can fall down as a result.

I got the rice and made thermal (microwaveable) neck wraps for the family for Christmas. It has been stored in our basement for about 2 yrs because I have no idea what else to do with it. I'll be feeding rice to the compost this weekend! Thanks!

Uncooked rice is a fairly stable staple and can be stored for a very long time, but if that is not an option perhaps giving it to a shelter, although some will not accept opened package food today. Composting is a good option.
Many places have discouraged the throwing of rice at weddings because birds actually will not eat this nutrient free white rice and it hangs around on the sidewalk, requiring someone to sweep it off, or it hangs around in the grass because even soil bacteria are reluctant to eat this nutrient free stuff.

Trust me on this. Pigeons and sparrows are not exploding in Japan. Rice is harmful to no animal, period.

Please use the rice as food if you can. It seems a darned shame to waste such a large quantity. That would feed a shelter full of people for a day, at least. If you cook it, it can be used to feed pets. It is good as bird feed.

It is better than birdseed for many uses because it does not have a hard shell and will not germinate as readily without the right conditions.

In terms of food, you can use it for curries, Mexican food, Spanish dishes.

Uncooked rice will keep for years as a food storage item. Keep it and you just may appreciate some day.

It is possible that Kimmsr is talking about processed rice that is popular in the US. A famous brand name is UXXCLE BEN'S, but I know that MXXUTE RICE and other instant rices do this.
I do not know what they do to the rice, but, well, it ceases to be rice. I eat a lot of real rice, and I will tell you that the taste and texture are just destroyed.

I could understand birds and animals shunning THAT. I have never seen even a 10 pound bag of processed rice in the US. Almost certainly, what Kimmsr is describing in the last message and what the lady has are different.

As a final appeal, wasting food like this seems a darned shame. This rice could feed a family for weeks. It could feed a dog for months or extend their diet for more than half a year.

You all are making me feel guilty! lol This bag of rice has been stored in my damp musty cellar for 2 yrs in an opened bag....God only knows what could be living in it! I'm sure that it would even smell like the cellar if I tried to cook it. bleck! The dog is on a special diet and the nearest pet shelter is 45 minutes drive away...and they may not even take it.

I was simply hoping that it would be ok to put this in a compost pile or sprinkle it on the garden....I want to get rid of it without paying $$ to have it hauled away with my household garbage.

If I would have known how many lbs of rice it would take to make 6 neck wraps as Christmas gifts....I wouldn't have bought that much in the first place! :)

If it has been sitting that long in a damp musty cellar, I wouldn't trust it as food. I used to run a homeless shelter and they appreciate contributions of food, but not food that may be spoiled.

If I were you, I'd compost it.

toogreen...I've given up trying to figure out what kimmsr is trying to say, he's been wrong on too many occasions for me to place much credence in his posts.

I couldn't find any kind of rice (including the ones you alluded to) that are "nutrient free".

Grace, compost it or sprinkle it in your garden, it will be fine either way. Don't feel guilty, food banks or soup kitchens around here won't take opened packages and would end up throwing it out anyways.

Well there it is. If it has the damp musties, it has to go. Just a shame. It will be great on your pile, although that quantity would be excellent for fermenting before you do it. If you let it sit in water for a week or two, it will form a creamy white soupy stuff that will decompose much more quickly. You can also be sure that it will not germinate.
Let it sit til the end of the summer, and the water will be good as a bokashi starter.
Spread throughout a pile rather than glopped on, the fermented rice "sake" will make great compost for you.

Although nutrient free is probably not accurate for any rice, Kimmsr has been of great service to this forum for many years. I have not always agreed with all posts, but I have seen many come and go, and Kimmsr seems to have pretty reasonable opinions.

White rice is a staple of many diets in many parts of the world and because of this white rice many of these people are malnurished and that is why some have developed a yellow colored rice with more vitamin A that people will not grow and eat because it is not white rice. Brown and whole grain rice is very nutritious, but white rice has had all the bran, which contains the most nutrients removed.

I've spilled rice in the pantry a few times and put the sweepings directly on the lawn, and in the compost pile. No problems.
