citronella ants in a mulch pile - problem?

I have a year old pile of wood chips that I use for mulch. I'm almost through with it but for the past few loads I've noticed an increasingly strong citronella odor. I can only attribute this to the presence of citronella ants.

The article notes that these ants subordinate aphids and mealy bugs for food production. Is anybody aware of a situation where plants declined when citronella ants were around? Because of the pests that are associated with them?
