Comments (8)Well you have a sort of strange engine. It does not appear on my IPL CD but have run across it before and finally managed to get close to it on the B&S site but not the type numbers you have but not important. I would carefully inspect the rocker arm, push rods and the stud and threads in the head for damage. IF all appears well, I would reinstall the stud torquing to 85 INCH Lbs. using some thread lock which is relatively expensive but not nearly as expensive as taking to a repair shop. Also check that the valve guide has not worked up. Should not be more than 1/8" above the head casting. B&S went thru some "Identity crises" around this period. The 33 engine appears to be a "stretched" version of the 31 series engines which had a letter in the model number. The 31C--- has considerable differences from a 311--- for instance. I MAY have torque settings for that and I do have detailed instructions for valve adjustment for the 31 which I would use for the 33. IF you would like them, contact me at address below, put in proper format and remind me. Note that I am experiencing computer trouble at present so don't think I am ignoring you. Comments (4)On the 350777, the distance between the two exhaust ports is 10.844. On the 38577, the distance between the two exhaust ports is 11.508. this information is from the replacement engine sales catalog. According to the power portal, your engine does not exist, however 350777-1134-E2 does exist. Recheck your number. Comments (6)thanks for the tip. i was sort of afraid it was going to be the carb. i added stabil to the fresh fuel just now and according to it - it has some sort of cleaner in it. is this what you are talking about to try first, or is there a different carb solution to be added to the fuel? beacuse the stabil thing didnt really work - it almost got worse. i saw at home depot a spray can of something called "carburator cleaner" but i dont think that is to be added to the fuel - more like to spray somewhere, or possibly use during carb rebuild? second question, if I were to rebuild the carburetor - what would you suggest? I've never done it, how hard is it to figure out by following online instructions? i just looked up parts - rebuild kit is $15-20 and time it takes to learn and do it. the new carb is $150-$160 but could just plug and play. if i were to take on rebuilding it myself - would i need any specialized tools? if i were to take off the carb and take it to someone to rebuild it - how much would that typically cost? thanks again - trying to weigh options as the branches are piling up......See Morecraftsman mower tractor 21 hp
Comments (3)The engine should be a- Briggs 331877-1234-B1. They are somewhat susceptible to blow head gaskets, but CHECK the OIL first for the presence of gasoline. It will be a STRONG smell. Don't run the engine until this is resolved, since the "thinned out" oil has VERY POOR lubricating abilities....See Moremownie
