Does chionanthus virginicus/retustus need acid soil to do well??

This past winter, my bradford pear tree was completely destroyed by storm damage, and we were forced to cut it down. I've been searching for replacement tree, and I'm seriously considering chionanthus virginicus or chionanthus retustus. My question is, do they need acid soil to do well?? Our soil here in Illinois is pretty alkaline so I'm not sure if that would be a problem for them. Just curious.
