Need help ID'ing this motor

My little wood chipper project was going reasonably well...

I was being *really* careful with the carb as the unit is rather old - and wouldn't you know ... while cleaning the internal shutoff valve (which has a little spring on it) - the friggen tiny little spring goes *ROCKETING* across the friggen garage floor ... doomed ...

Is it a Briggs or a Tec ?

The numbers on the motor are :

Model: 143-214302

SN: 1126N

The numbers on the chipper are ( I think its a sears) :

Model: 917.285230

SN: 003867

your engine is a Tecumseh the 917 numbers are the model number for the chipper. If you enter them in the Sears parts website it should show you if they still sell anything for it. You might be ablw to get a few crude drawings of your chipper

Using your genus tip I think it might be Hypericum punctatum (Spotted St. John's-wort). Also looked at H. mutilum and H. boreale but the leaves seemed too small.

The discussion would be completely different if the machine wasn't still running except for an intermittent 'cut out' problem. It's life beyond this year is in question as well as every year beyond the next year after that. If anything this is an example of just how hard my job can be 'sometimes' and yet you guys come in here and fight me for it every day. Everything is a joke to you Ray? I just find it funny what people like to fight over. I view it as getting a customer by actually fixing something. That leads to it breaking again. The same thing can and does happen to new equipment all the time. Being able to fix things is a skill. I mentioned the 8 track tape. Who here has a record collection. Who here knows what a record is? The record went away because of long rewind times? ha, ha, ha.

Thanks guys - I was able to get another fuel cut-off valve assembly for the 3.5 HP tecumseh / Sears chipper.

MAN - I couldn't believe how *BADLY* the carb was corroded. This carb is not a bowl type arrangement - its bowl is actually a diaphragm and semi-flat plate which pulses the adjacent fuel cut-off valve...

Its a very simple and a very cute little carb ... Yes carbs (just like my grease covered teddy bear) can be cute and cuddly too...

The fuel line connection on the carb which has roughly a 3/16 ID was COMPLETELY CLOGGED !!! I really didnt think this dude was gonna run after I had it opened it up and dug in deep (it just kept getting worse).

After bolting it back up I had to work pretty hard to get it running - as it has 2 needle valve screws on it... And of course I dont know what the initial settings are for them ...

Anyway - after fiddling with it for about 5 minutes I was able to get it to run pretty well ... Now I have to get an air filter for it ... I wasnt gonna spend any money on it until I saw it running. (as the repair shop guy said - Yeah best to bake the cake b4 you put the icing on it)

I must admit I am darn o'feared of this little machine... While it has a little 3.5HP engine on it ... I never realized how friggen dangerous these things are!!! As Im dumping small brush into it, its blowing chips out the bottom, but its so violent down in the bottom end - that it will frequently toss splintered wood out of the top-load hopper as well ... WHOA!!!! that stick just went past my head at a frightening speed ...

Definitely something which requires safety glasses, gloves , maybe a full faced motorcycle helmet and a bomb defusing suit !! and absolutely NO CHILDREN in the immediate vicinity either...

I may have to craigslist this thing ...
