Lavender Lassie. Tolerates significantly less sun than most roses and will still bloom well. Super vigorous rose that is also cane hardy in zone 5b. It blooms heavily twice a year, spring and fall and will throw some scattered blooms in between. Both the spring and fall flush are very heavy.

Scent is strong and blooms are double and it stays clean here for me except for some very minor 5-10% infection of BS on the lower leaves which it shrugs off quickly without any intervention on my part.

Interesting! Most of the sites I looked at said it was full sun and not a climber. This is why I need on-the-ground advice. Any other suggestions?

Annie Laurie McDowell, anthoer Hybrid Musk. I'm not sure about her cold resistance, but she survived a very nasty winter here.

Here are some pics of my LL at the start of the spring flush last year. The fence is 7ft high and I grow her as a freestanding shrub and she is hard pruned to stay around that size. She wants to be about 10'+ easily. Where I have them planted, they received about the same amount of sunlight as you have noted. I'll post up some pics from this year also once she starts blooming as by the looks of things, tt will be a pretty spectacular first flush.

LL has not been cane hardy for me, yet, but I am hoping she will grow out of it. This is her third year with me.

I didn't but I heard very good things about Quadra being tip hardy and very good bloomer. Search for Mad Gallica posts and photos.

Quadra doesn't tolerate significant shade. It prefers a good 6 hours of sun to thrive and grow vigorous canes.

That's unfortunate, because it looks gorgeous. Okay, if we just stuck to 1-5 (not caring about the smell, and opening it up to multiple blooms or ones that do one exceptionally long bloom), are there any outstanding ones out there?

I'm just going to second Lavender Lassie... I'm not in your zone but it's a gorgeous rose that smells absolutely charming and can be in partial shade.

Have you thought about Madame Alfred Carriere? It's a pale white with tinges of pink... very vigorous, and can tolerate partial shade.

You should probably consider other Hybrid Musks, too... like Penelope, Cornelia or Felicia. You could also consider DAs like A Shropshire Lad Climbing, The Generous Gardener Climbing...etc, they list a few more on their site. Cecile Brunner cl and Buff Beauty are gorgeous and vigorous rose, too.

Please take my recommendations with a grain of salt as I'm a bit of a newbie, but perhaps this will give you some ideas.

Here's another page (below) that talks about shade tolerant roses. You could take that list and compare it to the zones and photos on helpmefind to find some for you. Probably pic a few off that list that have multiple recommendations.

Why not New Dawn? If it's on a fence, it should be easier to control. I've heard it can be a monster on an arbor, but better along a fence. New Dawn is cold hardy, it's supposed to do well in partial shade and has a nice fragrance. I think it meets all the criteria on your list :)

New Dawn fits almost all of the criteria, I was just hoping for something that was a repeat bloomer. That, plus I like to give my DW 3-5 options in the plant department so she feels like she's the one making the decision. ;)

New Dawn is a repeat bloomer, the parent dr. van Fleet is not. You just have to be sure that you get the real New Dawn.

Yeah, from a lot of the reviews, it seems that a significant percentage of people didn't get the 'real' New Dawn. Who sells it?

For a climbing yellow rose that is hardy and that will tolerate shade better than most roses, 'Leverkusen' is your best bet. Golden Wings is also hardy and very shade tolerant, but is not a climber.

Golden Showers is another yellow climbing rose that can handle shadier spots, but it is not at all hardy or disease resistant.

And a quick note regarding the Hybrid Musk roses. Many are not very hardy. Some yes, but most are not.

Morden Man: what do you know about the hardiness about Kordes' Aloha Hawaii? That would be yellow and apricot but I have no idea about its shade tolerance. Pickering also sells a yellow by Brownell called Golden Arctic -are you familiar with that? It is listed as winter hardy.
Golden shower is such a pathetic rose I would not recommend it even if it were hardier.

By the way, I think Pickering has the real New Dawn.

The problem is the shade as requirement otherwise you could have more options.

Hardy to zone 6 if you can protect it well, is Zephrine Droughin (second word is not spelled right) It's also thornless.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think I'm an experienced/dedicated enough rose gardener to baby a zone 6 rose to decent results in a part-shade zone 5 spot that won't get any heat from the house.

Hi! I am in zone 5b Oh (Central Ohio) and have been trying to grow climbers here. So far they are too young to tell you much. But are you familiar with Peter Schneider and his book " Right Rose Right Place" He has a whole chapter on climbing roses(he has 1200 roses on his property). Off the top of my head I seem to remember him saying that Phyllis Bide was a good rose for the conditions you mention. He lives in the Ravenna area I believe. My book is lent out or I'd look it up for you!

Cornelia's blooms are not usually a straight pink, but have a lot of yellowish warmth, especially focused in their centers. Buds with a deeper shade of coral/strawberry red. Janet at Rogue Valley says: "I would say it will grow well in Zone 6 for sure, but may, quite possibly, survive in colder climates with just a bit of care." Barbara Wilde's Roses book lists this one for zones 4-10. Antique Rose Emporium says zones 6-9. Help Me Find says zones USDA zone 5b through 10b.

Ghislaine De Féligonde's blooms change depending on the weather, but can have some definite apricot or orange shades, though most commonly the yellow colors are seen. Usually they fade quickly to very pale or white, though, so at any one point the bush has a large mix of warm colors. Barbara Wilde's Roses book lists this one for zones 5-10. Help Me Find lists the rose for zone 5.

Either of these varieties ought to work for your spot, I'd guess. Plant two along the 15-foot distance and either variety ought to quickly fill it in and top your fence. Both are fragrant, flexible, and low in thorns. Both can work well in a pretty good bit of shade. If you don't also want a shrubby effect standing out from the fence but want more to use all the rose's leggy canes to covering the fence, Cornelia might be the better choice. If what you want to see is more like a full shrub that you could also take its longer canes to use for completely covering the fence behind it, then Ghislaine might be the one to choose. But they are not drastically different in form, according to all the pictures I've seen. (I've had Cornelia, but had to get rid of it with RRD after only one year. It did look as if it would make a wonderful climber that would easily do a good job in covering a fence, as far as everything I could see in the rose's habits.) Ghislaine's pictures lead me to believe that that one would cover every square inch of the fence in a large dose of vigorous growth everywhere.

You might get by with just planting one rose in the middle, but I'd use 2 if I were doing it. Using 3, it would fill in in a really big hurry and perhaps ask for some pillars and a trellis too!

No, not in agreement. I have a New Dawn down the same fenceline as the Lavender Lassie's. It does well, but does not compare to LL in bloom production, fragrance and vigour. While ND is always disease free for me, the blooms can ball at times and LL is more cane hardy for me than ND.

Ceterum,

Aloha Hawaii is still too new for me to comment on cane hardiness yet as I find most roses improve their cane hardiness by about the 3 year point. To date, it is not as cane hardy as say Laguna. I lose about 60-70% of cane each spring.

I'm not familiar with Golden Arctic at all, but both Lverkusen and Goldstern are decently cane hardy yellow climbers and Leverkusen will tolerate more shade than most.
