You're probably thinking of something more sophisticated, but I really like my wire bins for ease of turning. The one to the right in this picture has a larger mesh than I like, so I lined it with cardboard to keep my dog from yanking stuff through the mesh.

thanks annpat - did you keep it hot this winter?

The pile was steaming hot when I turned it the above night in early January. Turning it cooled it off, and it never heated back up again. I did the same thing in my chicken house---turned the steaming litter, put a chill into it, and never got the temps back up.

I'm surprised it is just yours so far - must be a nice sunny day everywhere and I'm stuck at work.

jon - that is amazing!
do you think the cinderblocks are adding heat? Are the closed sides slowing down airflow in a noticable way (although it clearly doesn't matter based on all that steam). Was it a choice to place it on a concrete pad? Do worms still move in or does the heat and pad prevent them from coming to the compost pile?

The cinderblock is just for longevity, it is awesome though,worms never come into my piles anyway, I keep them heated until I use them,works like a charm...

Because of the frequency of my turning and adding in materials,there is no issue with air.

Here are a few shots of the double bin I built a few weeks ago out of pine boards and hardware cloth. For easy access and mixing, the front panels and the center divider between the bins are removable 1x6s spaced 0.5 inches with screws on the ends. The sides and back are 0.5 inch hardware cloth. The lids are hinged. The close up shows how I arranged the brackets for the panels.

Mine is 3 rebuilt pallets from 4 broken free ones to form a U shape, and wrapped in leftover lattice used on our deck. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of it.

Thank you all for the inspiration. Here is my new bin made from old skids. each bin is 3x4'. i think I am going to oil the wood to see if I can extend it a little longer. I didn't build it myself - I traded for the labor from craigslist, so thanks for the good trade Christopher.

Zach2024 My compost bin is made out of used wooden pallets. It was built 5 years ago and is still like it was when it was built. No rotting wood.

How long are you wantng your bins to last? I personally wouldn't take the time to oil yours, but somebody else may have a different opinion, or reason why you should or shouldn't.

5 years is a very good life span - I was hoping my compost pile would be so strong it would compost the wood containing it. But I guess thats more fantasy then reality.
I'd love to skip the oiling and just get back to the garden.

More boring but well-loved pallet bins! I had an extra so I put a roof on one side and will now assess whether it is helpful in any way. We get a lot of rain, and it might be nice to have a surface that I could attach a tarp to.
