Broadmoor 16hp engine

Hi,

When was the last year Simplicity put a 16hp Engine in the Broadmoor with a 44" deck. The reason why I ask is because the dealer I was talking to says it is a 2006 model with a 16hp Vanguard engine. All the research I have done shows a 20hp engine. I recall the last time Simplicity put in a 16hp engine was back in 2004 which was a Honda engine. Is my dealer trying to sell me a 2004 model by saying its a 2006?

I have the brochures from 04 , 05 , 06 , and the last year 16 horse engines were available in the Broadmoor was 04 with a 16 Horse Kohler single and Vanguard or Honda 16 horse twins . If this is the $2600 tractor from your earlier post I'd still get it if it's new as that's probably dealer cost or close to it for that machine which is basically unchanged from a current Broadmoor except for the engine choices . A mystery as to why they're insisting it's an 06 though , but the dealer I bought my Broadmoor from thought the Home Depot Deeres were made by Murray instead of in the old Scotts Tennessee plant by Deere .

Researching this from the brochures I realized my Broadmoor is an 05 when I noticed the 02/05 date on the bottom of my owners manual - they told me it was an 04 leftover and gave me a discount accordingly . So while dealers may not know the product they are selling as well as the consumer , what really matters is the deal you get on a quality machine and $2600 (basically a Regent price) for a Broadmoor with that smooth Vanguard engine and a 44" deck is a great deal .

IF you can see the engine #'s, look at the code. The year the engine was built should be obvious.
It's no proof, but I would consider that to be a good indicator....

to amplify rusty's reply, yer carb is allowing raw fuel right on thru into the engine's crankcase. DO NOT RUN engine until contaminated oil has been drained, new filter installed and fresh crankcase oil added. The contaminated oil will not properly like your engine causing premature catastrophic failure. M/W, find/correct cause of carb leak and - per Rusty's suggestion - spend a cuppla bucks to put in an inline manual fuel valve - and use use to shut fuel off to the engine every time you shut it down/put it up. Cheap insurance.You can get them at any shop that service lawn tractor engines.

If you want to rule out the valve issue, then just roll this tractor to where your car is. Put a set of booster cables on the car battery. Put the positive cable onto the terminal on the starter that has the heavy cable attached to it. Take the negative booster cable and press it firmly against the engine block or tractor chassis with the ignition key in the "ON" position. If the engine spins over easily and starts, remove the negative cable from the engine block or tractor frame. Try this a few times. If you get the same results, then you just proved two things. 1. The valves are likely adjusted correctly 2. Your tractor has a seperate starting solenoid somewhere. So let's pretend that the above scenario has occurred. Next step. Take the booster cable off of the starting mower. Trace the heavy wire that is on the starter motor back to the starter solenoid. Put the positive booster cable onto the OTHER big terminal on this solenoid. Clamp the negative booster cable lead to a clean spot on the engine block or the tractor frame so that it makes good electrical contact. Now try starting the tractor with the keyswitch. If the clicking noise is still there, the a new solenoid should solve the problem. The clicking sound is the solenoid pulling in. However, the round disc inside the solenoid is not making proper electrical contact and needs to be replaced.

OK, you titled your thread as "no spark" but you say feeding gas into the carb intake will produce a very short run. Stop right now referring to running as "sparking", it will only add to the confusion. Here's what you have. It is indeed making a spark or else it would not be running at all. And the auxiliary gas supply you are pouring into the carb indicates that it WILL run when fuel is offered to it. So it comes down to this: Either you are not getting fuel into the carb float bowl (perhaps a defective fuel pump) or gas is not able to flow out of the carb through the proper passages. Post back whether this engine depends on gravity or if it has a fuel pump to fill the float bowl. Then we can direct you a little better on which way your tests need to go.

Thanks Nine and Bill. I will check more into it. I just found another Broadmoor in the last 30 minutes with a 20hp vanguard for $2900. It looks like we will be buying another .75 acres so now I will be looking at 1.25 acres.
