Kohler Command Single or Briggs Twin Intec

Looking at Simplicity Lawn tractors, the 2008 models start with the Kohler Courage 18 HP but the dealer has a new previous model with a 18 hp Kohler Command single cylinder that they will sell for the same price as the 2008 with the Briggs 20 hp twin saying that the command model retails for higher. They say that the v-twin is a 2 cylinder intec and not as good as the command. Is the Command a better buy than the Brigs twin at the same price?

I think the Command SINGLES don't seem to have the problems that the various V twins seem to encounter.

Is this a PRO?

I have been mowing with a 2006 Simplicity Broadmoor with an 18 HP Kohler Command single cylinder without issue.

The 18 HP does everything I need it to. I have a 44" deck with the mulching attachment and the Command has plenty of power to mulch and has done what ever I've asked of it so far.

rcmoser.... Yes, changing oil frequently is good. I actually change the oil every 25 hours of engine time. Every 50 hours, I change the oil filter too. That makes 6 oil changes per year.... We don't often get feedback as to how effective frequent oil changes are in preserving our engines. I recently had to disassemble my 26 hp Briggs Intek V-twin to replace a leaking sump gasket. The engine has been mine since new, with the above oil change schedule. Currently the hour meter reads 751 hours. Below, I will post two pictures of what my 'lower end' looked like when I cracked it open, for the first time, last month (before any cleanup). In the pictures you can see the sump gasket pieces scattered all over the sump and block. Other than the gasket pieces the 'lower end' is perfectly clean. Not a sign of any gunk or sludge could be found. Now I know why Briggs designed the engine with that oil screen in the bottom of the sump. The purpose of the screen is to prevent pieces of their cheap and poorly applied sump gasket from reaching the oil pump!

***"What will removing the kill harness from the coils and do a test run tell me?"*** That was brought up due to the fact that the ignition system here (in vee twins) is configured as 2 separate magnetos...........joined together into a single kill wire circuit, for convenience when shutting down the engine. With magnetos, you must ground one leg of the primary coil circuit in order to "kill" the spark generation. A problem or obstacle arises when you have an engine configured with multiple cylinders and multiple magnetos. The focal point in this is that in order to kill both magnetos with a single kill wire circuit, you gotta join the kill wires from each magneto together so that both mags are killed simultaneously when a command to stop the engine is issued. This "command" might come from the ignition key switch when the machine operator turns the key switch to OFF, or.......the command may be issued by one of the safety interlock switches or relays (depending on the make of machine). The problem or obstacle when simply connecting the kill wires from each magneto together in the form of a "hard wire" splice is that connecting the kill wires together will cause serious and detrimental operating effects on BOTH magnetos when the engine is running. In theory, the kill wires can be kept separated from each other by providing a separate kill wire circuit for each magneto..........and running the pair of kill wires all the way to a specially designed key switch having 2 individual kill wire terminals (1 for each mag) which remain completely separated from each other until the key switch is turned off. Now, that in itself is a bit more complex than the single wire system that is industry standard.............but it gets worse. Because in modern OPE, there is a safety interlock system, with multiple switches wherein each switch can issue the command to kill the engine spark.............each switch would have to have double circuits for the magneto kill function, or a master relay for magneto kill having 2 separate circuits would have to be employed. All this double wire stuff and special switches in various locations could conceivably add hundreds of dollars per unit built to the OEMs cost of manufacture, and that cost would be passed on to the consumer. To overcome this obstacle, Briggs overcame the problem by connecting the kill wires together with 2 diodes, so that the separate magnetos stay separated electrically from each other during normal operation (and therefore do not interfere with each other's spark making business). In this manner, the kill wire function can be controlled by the same simple type of switches now in use. Now, for why this is something to be concerned about if you own one of these Briggs engines. Occasionally, one of the diodes can become defective. If becomes defective OPEN, there may not be any noticeable difference in how the engine runs, but when trying to stop the engine, one cylinder may continue to have spark. If this is on an engine that has a fuel solenoid, you might not even notice that you have a cylinder still getting spark, because the fuel solenoid stops main jet fuel when the key is turned off, and the pilot jet fuel is not enough to keep the "live cylinder" running against the dead cylinder load. But, if one of the diodes becomes SHORTED, or any sort of continuity in both directions develops, there will be some problems in how the 2 cylinders run. Tomplum's suggestion of isolating the magnetos from their kill wires is a way to determine if there is a problem of 1 cylinder being dead. But to separate the mags from their kill wires properly, you must disconnect each wire from the magneto itself, and that means taking off the flywheel cover. If you remove the flywheel cover, put it back on before running the engine or you will overheat it because with the cover off, there is no air flow across the cylinders. "I'm sure it could be used to feed a 31C I just don't know where you "put" the hose to the crankcase pulse/vac." While I have seen this series of engine with vacuum take off in the valve cover and in the oil fill tube, a quick scan of the IPLs of all the 31 series engines I have on CD did not turn up any illustration showing that. One person posted on one of these forums that he epoxied a take off into the oil fill tube. I think that is very risky and would instead install a more substantial take off in the valve cover. The manual Mownie showed is complete uninformative about where to attache the vacuum hose, I understand there is a newer manual out but I have not looked for it. Walt Conner

hello HU-407961074 I am not going to read through all the comments above. Hope you have tried their suggestions. This is long. The original part number is 394891. B&S changed the part number to 590781 when they switched to a chinese supplier. The retail price for this item is close to $60.00. All the cheap armature ignitions on the internet may work ok, but I don't know. The original ignition seldom fails. Mice destroyed your sparkplug wires. Another failure occurs when the key switch fails and voltage is introduced into the armature coil shut off wire. When the key is turned off, the shutoff wire should be connected to ground only. Any voltage will instantly destroy a new armature coil. Corrosion on the mounting post and mounting screws is another problem that will cause loss of ignition. A shorted shutoff wire will also cause a problem. When installing a new armature coil, clean the mounting post to insure a good connection. A small wire brush will work fine. Make sure there is no corrosion on the armature laminated stack. The mounting screws must be clean. Direction of installation is marked on the armature coil. With the armature pulled away from the flywheel, tighten the screws. Rotate the flywheel until the magnets are next to the armature. Install a spacer (.008 - .012) between the armature and the magnets. A business card will usually work. Loosen the screws and the armature will be attracted to the magnets. Tighten the screws. Remove the card by rotating the flywheel. Feed the ignition wires to the sparkplugs but do not install. Leave the shut off wire disconnected. Connect the sparkplug leads to an air gap ignition tester. The tester should have a .166 gap. Approximately 13,000 volts is needed to jump the .166 gap. If you do not have the proper tester, make your own. Connect the ignition tester to the engine block - not the spark plugs. NOTE: The glow light ignition testers do not always work well, so do not use. These will glow at a voltage too low to start a small engine. You can test for ignition now - even with the blower shroud removed. You will need to hold the oil filler in position so it does not blow out. Care is needed with a rotating flywheel. Look at the spark tester for ignition. A spark can be blue, amber, or invisible. A darken area may be needed when performing this test. Before connecting the shut off wire, you must insure the key switch is not feeding voltage and that the off position connects to ground. Install the blower shroud. Sparkplugs may have carbon or oil on the porcelain. This may form a carbon trail for the voltage to follow and you will never see a spark. A crack in the porcelain will also cause loss of spark. If your flywheel key is sheared, the engine may not start due to incorrect timing, however you should still have spark. If the engine does not start after ignition is restored and timing is restored, ask questions.

Extra noise and vibration from the single larger cylinder makes it a no go for me. I have tried out my neighbors ZTR with a Command one lunger and it is even louder than I thought.

At the same price , no absolutely not ! While the Command is a good engine and a grade above the Courage it will vibrate more than a twin . But the reason it's a bad deal is that Regent , while new is at least 3 years old and those came with a $300 rebate from Simplicity which I believe the dealer still gets for those older discontinued models . It would be a good deal if discounted , which it should be since it's at the very least an 05 model . No surprise the dealer still has it if he's still trying to get top dollar for an older model . It sounds like that dealer is selling that older Regent at full retail and pocketing the $300 rebate . I'd stay away from dealers who operate like that !

Thanks for the input, I went back to the dealer and they had just sold the old model with the command so my decision was made for me. Now I'm trying to decide whether to go for the courage or spend 400 more for the briggs twin ELS.

I have the Regent 22/44 with the Briggs ELS. I can't speak for longevity, but the engine is smooth, powerful, and relatively quiet.

Gee, whats all this about engine vibrations? Every engine i have used and heard, made more noise than a Cadillac, and naturally had more vibrations!
i'd say, if ya are worried about vibrations, go buy a Caddy to tow a rotary mower around the lawn, and forget about vibrations! Or, buy a nice easy chair, and remove the standard seat and install the soft, cushy easy chair! After all, most lawns don't take more than an hour to mow!
And, folks pay lots of money to buy something to use on their arthritis pains, such as some kind of vibrating thing! So, why not combine both items into one vibrating tractor, and be really happy!

The noise and vibration from my Kohler single is WAY less than the noise and vibration from the mowing deck.

I guess if you want to sit in the garage and listen to it idle a twin might be quieter and "smoother". If you actually intend to use it, bouncing across the lawn while mowing will mask any noise and vibration from either engine.

Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about any of the engines. I highly doubt Simplicity would put a garbage engine on any of their machines.

Noise and viberation add's. One noise just doesn't cover up the other noises. Same for viberations.

I'm surprised no one is comenting on the great gas economy from the Kohler singles. I don't have first hand feel for the twins, but many comments on these boards suggest that they are quite a bit more thirsty. I do know that my 16hp Kohler Command is a honey, and a true gas miser vesrsus other's I have run, including Kawi's.

I've found that Briggs Vanguards and Inteks are amongst the most economical engines I've used. And as for noise, I'd sooner spent a couple of hours behind a twin than a single. Eventually the noise of a single penetrates your brain and you start gritting your teeth and clenching your fists!

I had the same choice 10 years ago. Could have got a 15hp single koler or 14 hp twin vanguard. I ran them both and was astonished how much smoother the twin seem to run. Nothing against the singles and the dealer told me the single would probably be better on gas. My 14hp twin appears to use around 3/4 gallon per hour but thats not scientific just my best guess. I have no regrets at all.

I have an old Sears single cylinder 8 or 10 HP techumsah motor (i know its no prize). But that old Tec motor runs every time i need it and never misbehaves... This unit has a hard life towing huge stones, boat trailers, etc... But I love it because it sips gas ... It is a bit noisey - but I think mostly because of the meager exhaust fitted to it way back when...

I have a 10 year old Scotts 2046 with a 20 HP B&S Intek motor... also runs great... nice and quite... and very smooth / little vibration... On the other hand the deck and ride cause enough noise/vibration ... so the point might be moot. A complete pig on gas compared to the little single cylinder Sears.

Sometimes I pretend I have money - and I look at the new riders. I would definitely get a single cylinder for the gas consumption. (I dont care about HP too much - my 8 HP sears can drag a loaded boat trailer; a 12-18 HP can certainly cut my lawn) Im sure their much more quite than the old Sears... Having a single cylinder I can say that it vibrates more than the twin - but thats NOT something which should be a deciding factor...

I would say that a pressure fed oil system would be a requirement ... Overhead valves would be nice (most new stuff has that).

But I would also try to find a unit with a sturdy tranny (for my abusive ways)...
