Liquid Amber removal questions

I currently have a liquid amber tree in a spot where I would prefer a smaller tree like a japanese maple, and I'm wondering what the best way to go about replacing the one with the other would be. I don't mind waiting a year or two between removing the one and planting the other, but I would rather not wait too long.

If we cut down the liquid amber and paint the stump with Roundup to kill the roots and prevent suckers, will that harm the japanese maple that is planted later?

If we have the stump ground without poisoning it first, will the bits left in the dirt sprout into a thicket of young trees?

I want to do this right, because I want to have a nice garden that is not full of roots and suckers. Any advice will be appreciated, thanks in advance!
