Planting tree near house? Do root barriers work?

Hi,

I live in Highland Park, Los Angeles, Zone 10. The soil is good and water doesn't puddle up when it rains but the soil isn't too soft either. Slight hillside.

I want to plant 2 fairly fast growing evergreen fruit trees for fruit and privacy that would be 7-8 feet from the house.

I'm thinking of planting a Longan (grow 15-25 feet in california) and a Jamaican Cherry tree (grows 25-40 feet, but i'd prune it to 15 feet).

Will the roots cause problems with the foundation?

Should I use a root barrier (will it work)?

Thanks!

Ari
