Starter Not Engaging Flywheel
Comments (27)I just had this same problem, starter turning but not popping up to engage the flywheel. Just by chance I noticed that my battery terminals had become really corroded just over the last month. I took them apart and cleaned the Posts and the cable connectors really well and sprayed them with battery terminal protector. After that my starter began working again. Easy fix this time!!!...See MoreAriens snow blower starter or starters in general
Comments (4)Also note the word "little" regarding lube for the shaft.Usually the difficulty is that the gear is not traveling down the shaft. Hence why Bill noted to check for a burr. At times the pinion itself is worn or the drive disc inside is glazed. Many of these pinions have a rubber disc above the metal drive disc at the bottom of the gear. Lube there and you will be dead in the water, er snow. A very light , non gumming lube is what you want. Standard silicone is great. The best repair is to actually take the starter off removing the gear to clean the rust away before lubing, but you may get by doing it on the machine carefully as described above....See MoreBriggs starter issue. Comments (27)***" did i mabey get a bad battery?"*** It's possible, but it would be wise to find out if the engine's charging system is even working before you take the new battery back for an argument. Get a volt meter, set it to "DC Volts". Connect one lead to the battery positive post and the other to the battery negative post. If this battery is fully charged (which I doubt) it should show at least 12.6 volts and maybe even as high as 13.2 volts. Anything less than 12.6 and the battery certainly has not had a charge. Record the exact volt reading on a piece of note paper. Next, perform your jump start trick and do it as quickly as possible (meaning don't leave the jumper cables connected for longer than it takes to get your engine running). Disconnect the jumper cables as soon as your tractor engine is running. While running your tractor engine at max RPM, connect your volt meter to the battery again as you did before. Hopefully, the reading you see will be higher than the first time you checked the voltage. Write down the present reading. Let the engine run about 5 minutes and recheck the voltage reading, write down the reading. After 5 minutes run time, connect the volt meter to the battery again. This reading should be even a bit higher than the previous reading after the engine began running. If none of the readings show any increase in voltage (or if the voltage actually decreases) the engine charging system is defective. If that turns out to be true, we will need the model and type numbers of the engine before going further with testing....See Moremtd white lt-15 doesn't start and electrical problem
Comments (7)Briggs & Stratton has quite a bit of info on their site. I had to dig a little, but the electrical system is fully diagrammed on there. Anyway, now the starter works. I didn't really do anything - it just started working. But I took the cover off and cleaned a little and lubricated with Teflon-based Tri-Flow anyway. It seems to work smoothly, so I don't know what was holding it up before. The lights problem was a short somewhere. When I lower the deck, there's a dead short to ground. I can't find where because the harness goes behind the sheet metal and I can't get good visibility in there. So I just wired around it, and it now works fine. Thanks for the tips. --Marc...See Morezoulas
