carbon addition to compost that I can buy

I am in the process of collecting veggie, fruit, tea, and coffee scraps into a plastic trash can that has holes drilled into the bottom and sides. I either dump it into another trash can to aerate it or roll it along the ground. I'm not sure if this will work or not, but I thought I'd give it a try.

If I have this right, this is the nitrogen addition to my compost, but I need carbon too. Is there something ready-made that I can just buy and keep next to my trash can? I live in a suburban area and having a bale of hay is not an option. I don't have a bunch of leaves and I have two young children, so time to collect branches, leaves, etc. is short. I tried shredding newspapers from my mom, but tearing out all the color pages took awhile.

I love the thought of putting my food waste back into my garden, but I need something to easily add to my compost. Can you just buy sawdust or bark or something that would work?
