Wheelhorse 211-4 4sp Battery/Wiring HELP!

I just purchased a Wheelhorse 211-4 4sp with a Briggs engine. I beleive that is an '88. I bought it for only $150 so I figure I'm ahead. However it needs a muffler and Toro want $240 just for the muffler. So I bought an after market one.

Question: My battery keeps dying on me, every time I run it when I turn it off it wont start again. I can jump it but the blades don't spin. Only after 7hr charge will it run again. The person I bought it from said he put a new wiring harness in and the battery was/is new. Now I have this 25amp fuse in line that keeps blowing out and of course it doesn't start.

Can anyone help? I don't have my operators manual yet but it is on it's way. I have never owned or ran a lawn tractor before so I am very green. Has anyone had a similar problem. Any suggestions?

if the 25amp fuse keeps blowing, then you have a wiring problem. that is why your battery won't charge.

basically you will have a ground and hot coming off the battery. the hot will go to a solenoid and to the switch. the other side of the solenoid will have a hot wire going only to the starter. you have 1 wire that comes back from the switch to activate the solenoid.

depending on HOW it wires up, the charge wire fromteh engine may either go to teh switch, the hot(battery) side of the solenoid, or directly to the battery. this is the line that should be fused.

did YOU put in the 25 amp fuse or was that what was there to begin with? 25A is a LOT for a tractor. if you oversize the fuse, you eventually may have melted wires and a fire.

post the model number of both the engine and the tractor, someone here should be able to find you diagram fairly easily.

The serial No. of the Wheelhorse is 32-11B402 34321. As for the engine. I will have to look into that when I get home.

As i said I am new to all of this and like most others, want to do it right.

The 25A fuse was already there. I think there was another fuse in line somewhere also. But will have to double check. I have been told it is probably a wiring problem and so this seems like a logical place to start.

What should I be using for a fuse? I am assuming it is not right at the moment. I will try and follow all that you told me. Makes sense just a little harder without a diagram in front of me (also I am no way close to being a mechanic). I will get back with further info as soon as I can. Thanks for your help!

Alex, You need to pay attention to the excellent advice you are getting. I am a professional troubleshooter and Bill is offering you a proper diagnostic procedure. Why not pay attention to what he says? If you don't understand then ask a question. If you want to go the semi random route then you can do the following: Try another battery (e.g. try the jumper cable to your car's battery Take off each wire and with a wire brush or sandpaper and WD-40 clean the terminal, wipe it dry and replace it. The places you need to do this are either end of each battery cable and either end of the cable from the solenoid to the starter. Assuming the battery is OK (don't assume, try another)then by far the most likely problem is a high resistance connection on one or more of the connections discussed above. A high resistance connection will cause a voltage drop when the starter is engaged. If you follow Bill's instructions you can painlessly learn which connection it is and only deal with the actual cause of your problem. Best of luck

VR = Voltage Regulator. "Charging diodes" DO NOT "operate at about three amps", nor are they RATED at about three amps. They "operate" by design, within a range of current from zero amp.....to the maximum current that can be produced by the alternator of a specific application. If the maximum output of a given alternator was three amp, then the design would require that the rectifying diodes be rated for a minimum of "3 AMP". If the maximum current output of a given alternator was 25 AMP, the diodes would need to be rated for a minimum of "25 AMP" on so on ad infinatum. Now to the part about "bad battery will increase amps drawn possibly over the diode rating causing failure". Let us use an example scenario where the alternator can produce a maximum output of 25 AMP . If the battery was "bad" (let's say it has a "dead cell"), or just completely discharged (really makes no difference here), the voltage regulator would be operating to send the maximum design current to the battery in an attempt to raise the voltage level of the battery to the optimum design voltage for the type of battery used. At this point, the alternator is "maxed out" and the diodes are carrying 25 AMP (as they were chosen to do in this application). The fact that the battery is bad, or dead can only cause the alternator to produce the 25 AMP max output it was built to produce. High AMP Draw cannot cause an alternator to create more output than it was designed to.

Happy New Year! Looking for some help from you veteran WH owners: I'm in the middle of a full frame-off restoration of the '89 312-8 I inherited. These machines are so well put together that most of my work will be paint, wiring and replacing some worn out bushings, etc. Question for you or any other WH owner out there: on the rear wheel mounting flanges there are two set-screws that hold each flange to the axle. The head of the bolt is square, then there is a hex nut between that and the flange casting. Is this a lock nut or is it welded on to the flange as part of the attachment? Before I go putting too much torque on these things and breaking something I'm trying to figure out how they're hitched together! I've got some play in one of the flanges I'd like to eliminate - maybe replace the woodruff key? Thoughts/tips/pointers, please?

Perseverence certainly pays off. Regarding this problem of the starter control circuit not activating the starter solenoid. When a solenoid does not "kick in" when the key is turned to start, a good way to begin the search for a cause is to jumper from the BATTERY SIDE of the solenoid over to the small terminal on the solenoid to see if the solenoid will activate that way. If the battery is not dead, a good solenoid will activate using a jumper, and the starter will turn. Caution! If your solenoid has 2 small terminals, DO NOT jumper to the grounded terminal. Of course, the solenoid is a 12 volt DC component, and like all the other electric parts on a machine, it too requires a "hot" & a "ground" to function. Any tests of a solenoid should include confirming a ground as well as any checking done to the "hots". I can't do anything at all about getting some rain, but I am working on a project to bring in some cooler weather. I expect to see some results about the first or second week in October. Write that down. :^)

I have the same problem. My mower came with a 15A blade fuse. I will replace it tomorrow and charge the battery before I use the mower. I thought that this mower had an alternator. Maybe I am wrong. I also don't have a manual. I just wanted to know if replacing the fuse solved your problem. I like this mower very much and would hate to get rid of only because it won't start. Please let me know.

It has been more than 5 years and 2 months since jomorisin said au revoir.
So I don't think he is going to provide an answer.
Now if you took the time to join this forum looking for serious help, you really ought to post a new thread of your own to describe your mower and the problem you are having.
Fuses blow for a reason, and rarely is it because the fuse was defective. Fuses blowing are usually an indication of a separate problem.
If you do post a thread on this, be sure to include the brand of machine, the technical model number of the machine and the brand, model number and type number of the engine.
Good advice requires a good bit of info from you for accuracy.
