Whatever happened to 'spading' a garden?

When I was a boy growing up in Wisconsin some70 years ago or so, my father would hire a man to spade the garden. Then we would rake it, use a hoe to make furrows and plant our garden.

I recent years, contending with weeds, I forgot about just digging the soil, turning over the weeds and letting them decompose adding organic matter to the soil and pretty much killing the weeds. I resorted to individually digging or pulling the weeds. A tedious job and not very effective. The other alternative and the one mostly used today is to cover with a weed smothering mulch.

Lately I've used newspaper and grass clippings. Not very good as by summers end the paper gets ratty, gaps appear and the weeds prosper. One year I resolved to weed one of my rose beds. That idea lasted about a week as I got worn out pulling weeds and making no progress whatever.

Today for some reason I just started to spade. Then it all came back to me. This is an old but really better way to deal with weeds.
