I figured out last winter that I spent roughly a few extra hundred dollars keeping the GH heated.

Frankly, I think it is well worth it.
It is a hobby I enjoy and having the GH keeps me happy and sane in our long winters. As I've mentioned in other posts, I also use it to make some extra money (last spring I made $3000 during a one-day plant sale).
I don't smoke or drink, we rarely eat out or even go to the show, casino etc. Certainly there are other pursuits I could spend my money on that would be far worse than heating a GH! :) Lots of folks think nothing of dropping a few hundred dollars on one dress, a pair of shoes or an evening out. Nothing wrong with spending $ on those things...my financial priorities are just different than other peoples.

Just something to think about when we are busy trying to justify the expense of our GH to other people or even ourselves. :)

    Cold! Cold! Cold!

My thoughts (I'm northwest of Nashville) are that there's not much use in covering anything. I've tried to plant things that were appropriate to my zone. The couple plants that I knew were "stretching" the zones I tried to plant in sheltered areas. If they go, they go, and I'll learn from the whole deal. My "big guys"--trees or larger shrubs that I spent more than a little money on--those guys are all hardy enough that they should shrug this off. (Or if they don't, why then I'll learn to cover them next time!) ;)

OK thanks. Since I can't find the plant itself anywhere near me could I start it from seeds, if so any tips you could share?

I had no idea they were hardy to that zone. At least it says it is to z 5 or 6. I was reading, prone to root rot in cooler /colder climates. I knew them to be hardy for sure to zone 7 or 8. It doesn't hurt to try it once. start seeds in the late winter, plant outside May and let it get a good full season of growth before the cold.

Cold Feet! Warm vs. Cold Water

    Q

    Comments (16)
No - it is not true. Variegated plants do not need to be dry before watering. They ALL do better on constant moisture - like wicking - if your soil is loose enough, wick is taking just enough water - it takes some adjustment. What Stamik is dealing with - you bottom water - you can easily make the soil soggy - may be temporarily - but with cool conditions - it can be detrimental. So in this case - too much is worse than not enough. Oldtimers didn't use wicks - but they used their index finger - if the first 1/2 inch of soil is dry - it is time to water. And with bottom watering - there is always a good practice -water - and in 15-20 minutes - pour the leftover water out of the saucers. Even if the top still fees dry - the moisture will gradually redistribute itself. It is not that we are running around dispensing a precise amount of water into each separate pot...

ole_dawg: Given enough insulation, including under and around the foundation of a well built, tightly sealed GH, an HE, direct vent nat. gas furnace, and the cost of keeping a GH warm isn't as costly as you might think.

Then add ceiling fans that run continually, one drawing up, the other blowing down, and the warm air is kept in constant circulation, with no hot or cold spots, and the cost is even less.

I tested the ground insulation in my GH this morning, when it was just under 20 deg. outside. I walked on the quarry tile floor in it in my bare feet without getting chilled.

We had a bitterly cold wind here yesterday. Having gotten into my car inside the garage I didn't really appreciate how cold, until I got out in an open parking lot and had to fight the wind walking to the store. After that, todays milder breeze and temps just above 20 seem warm in comparison.

Our temps are going to drop to +2 deg. late tonight and with the wind chill factor added to it, it will be at least -15 and as close to the ultimate test of my GH heat/insulation as I may get before the daffodils start coming up.

So on one hand, I wish it were warmer and on the other, just as glad to (hopefully) see the proof of the pudding and know for sure, but admit that I'm not looking forward to setting the alarm clock for 3 am.

Humm....I wonder if one of the cats would be willing to check the remote for me? They are convinced they are smarter than we are and as they run our lives and the house- they may be right. LOL!

We seem to be in a snow cycle. accumulations at least once a week, often every 3-4 days. 6-7 inches last night, with another 8-14 inches on the way tomorrow into Wednesday.

    sigh.

I guess Father Winter is making up for the last few years of below average snowfall....not even thru December and we've had nearly 30 inches of it.

    sigh.

    ODude,
My DAWG is actually a CAT. Generally cats don't try to lick you. Dawg however sleeps with me every night. She will curl up on one of my legs for between them. If is is realy cold she will crawl under the blanket and lay down next to my trunk and rest her head in the space made by my arm.
If she is out of food and I am still in bed, like today, she will jump on top of me and "Pad" on my chest and lay on it with her head next to mine, BUT SHE DOES NOT LICK ME.
    LOL
During the day when I am home and the heater is on she will lay down next to that. When I am gone and the heater is off she curls up in the middle of my down comfortor.

Supposed to be normal winter temps this week, 28-34* range. But then next week should be glorious 40-45* !!!!
That's great because I have to drive two hour round trip to the Big City for a work related course every day next week. Should be good road conditions. :)

  • rjinga

23 was the lowest for us last night...and it's still just about 33 at 3:30 in the afternoon....

the ONE good thing is that these longer lasting freezes will kill off some bugs!!! and that has not happened for years...so were were way overdue for a little beetle on a stick roast (or deep freeze, I mean ;)

  • birdwidow

The deep cold predicted for a few days ago turned into a toasty 33 deg., and more snow, about 8 inches. We got it all plowed, and the next day, it snowed again, but not as much, and it's supposed to warm up at the end of the week, with rain and temps in the 50's, so we decided to let the force that put those additional few inches of snow on the driveway take it away.

But tonight.... It's down to 7 now and will drop to 2 later, with wind chills into the minus 8 to 10 range, so I'll haul out of bed in the middle of the night- again- darn cats refused- just to be sure.

If the GH is holding within a degree of the 72 it's set for at 8 below, I'll relax and not worry about whatever the weather throws at us.

But it's really unfair. I went out in this cold to buy them nice things to eat, and even picked up a new catnip toy for them, and those useless, indolent beasts won't even check a remote for me. Ingrates!

Linda, I'm in Martin, TN - not far at all from Paris. My Son in law grew up in Buchannan close to the lake & my husband fishes all the time at Springville. Are you anywhere near??

It's REALLY cold here. The high yesterday never made it to above freezing. Do you have anyone to check your pipes? We'd didn't have anything freeze that we know of, but the buildings were heated. The low tonight should be about 19 - it was about 11 last night, but all improves tommorrow. Good luck!!!

You all have some really cold weather down there in the south. Perhaps you should take a vacation up here in the naawwrth. ha ha. We have Jamacian beach type weather. I posted in another post, we are supposed to be in the 40's this weekend. It can't get much nicer than that in January.

I seen a robin last week. I wonder if thats a sign of an early spring? We usually don't see robins until late March early April. Strange!

Hey Dawg...I'm a cat lover too. I have a beautiful black/grey persian named Picasso. He is SUCH a ham. I'm hoping to carry him to the greenhouse (once completed) with me anytime I'm out there playing. I don't let him outside. He is striclty and indoor (spoiled) baby.

This is sort of OT, but I thought you all might enjoy another COLD story. Early Thursday morning, it was bitterly cold when we saw what looked like a brown dog lieing on the ground in a corner of the paddock just off the barn. As we approached, he lifted his head and stared at us and didn't move until we were close enough to realize it wasn't quite a dog, but Wiley Coyote, warming himself on a manure pile accumulated since the snow melted then froze into the gears of the spreader.

It was a big dog Coyote, probably waiting for us to open the door to hen house and I was tempted, so he could learn the awful truth about those innocent looking wires running horizontally around the 6' high woven wire poultry yard fence.

Sex crazed bucks dukeing it out in the back yard, trying to charge me- and now coyotes, warming themselves while awaiting what they think will be an easy breakfast. When the first bear shows up, I may decide it's time to move to the City. LOL!

72 in the GH. Fish happy. Pet Gardenia happy. Cats curled up near heat vents, and happy. Ducks have heated bath, so have dipped and now snugged up in straw, with little webbed footsies tucked under, and happy.
