Keep my (secret) compost pile in your thoughts (wink)

The Home Owners Assoc spies were out today handing out "violations." From the looks/sounds of it, they focused on the front of the houses (things like remove christmas wreath - which I got, and curtains out of code, wrong type of garbage can, illegal propane grills, etc.).

We've lived here since they built this place almost 10 yrs ago, and they've really never done this before. The back of my place is (uniquely in the development) up against woods - thank goodness. So, hopefully they won't walk back there.

So, say a little prayer for the garden, the soil, the compost, that the HOA "police" stay away from the back of my house. I get so much enjoyment from turning the compost and a nice garden - which requires things like bagged leaves, which would also have to go :(

Wow, that sounds more like Gestapo. Were these rules in your original agreement?

Theresa, they are just jealous, there are two types of people in this world, those that compost and those that wanna compost (they just don't know it yet). LOL

So today I added a bucket of the smelly gunk that I could scoop out of the pond, some leaves, and kitchen scraps. Will get more pond gunk this weekend if it warms up some. It was a little chilly out there tonight, to be mucking around in the pond. Could turn my bins today, mostly thawed. Emptied finished compost from the smaller pile into the almost finished compost in the other bin. Was very Happy and oh so pleased with my pile, my bins are about 3'square and one is now full of lovely 90% usuable compost, plus one very big fat mouse. Probably should have added her to the pile but couldn't do it. No where near what others can produce here but Im still pleased :-)Frogged

This past weekend was all about using the compost, not adding to it. Last year's batch has now been spread on the new garden. Of course, this means that there's space in the bins again (living in the city, I use garbage can composters), so it will soon be time to refill them again. The new plan includes: shaken-out sod removed from the new garden bed, Winter kitchen scraps that have been stockpiled outdoors in lidded buckets, a bag full of random yard waste from a very late-season yard cleanup, some old leaves from a friend (we don't really get leaves in our fenced city yard), and possibly some rabbit and/or chicken manure, since I recently found sources for both. I'm hoping that for once, I'll have enough one-time additions to actually produce some significant heat. Anything's possible, right? :-)

Hey, I searched on 'dryer lint' and this thread came up. Question, I collect my dryer lint in a bag in my laundry room and it's now full. Can I put that in my pile? Is it a green or brown? And I'm assuming dryer sheets cannot go in? Lots of good tips here, the old protein powder, lobster carcasses an other things. I have 3 piles which are now mostly wood chips from last years trimmings and weeds and soon will have deadheaded roses from my garden. Luckily we finally got some needed rain an I am going to stir up the piles this afternoon.

They are hinges and there are slide bolts on the other side of the bin so the whole front can be swung open. Honestly, as often as I am inclined to open it, it is not very useful. Those bins are made out of shipping pallets with the bottom rails removed. This is their third year in the weather and the wood is splitting and the hinges and bolts have mostly come unscrewed. I think the next incarnation will involve a front panel that is fixed, but hinged horizontally in the middle so either the top or bottom half can be opened.

god that would get my goat, I'm glad my HOA is defunct. In fact, the area I've decided to clear back for gardening is technically HOA property but since it was overgrown with 15' bushes of poison oak - did you know poison oak could even grow in bush form? - I'm homesteading it and calling it my garden now.

At least none of my surrounding neighbors mind. They all contribute to my composting efforts.

There was a man out here in CA that would not use the "approved" gardener and cut his own bushes and lawns and planted his own flowers.

He was cited because his yard looked better than all the others.

I really think the people that run those things are just fustrated kindergarden hallway monitors.

Yep, I do live in the Country - about 1 hr past the 'burbs - takes 45 min to get anywhere - but when we moved here 9 yrs ago from 40th St & 2nd Ave Manhattan, w/2 very very busy self-employeds (I worked 70 hrs/wk then), we figured new construction townhouse would be better than an older home w/roof & furnace probs - of course, the new constrx (& affordable px) came w/a HOA.
Oh well, at least I feel better now thanks to y'all!

So Tree, the HOA Police are after your compost? Tsk, tsk. That's a shame. Be a terrible thing if they found out about it, and you lost everything, now wouldn't it? Terrible, just terrible.

Me an' my buddies, we got this little Compost Protection Plan, see? You just forward us a gallon a month, and we takes care of those HOA chumps. No more worries.

Every month, by the first. NO EXCUSES. Be a terrible thing if you had to lose the whole pile...

Yeh give anybody any amount of power and they just GOTTA show you how important they are...
I'll never live anywere with an HOA why oh why would we want all the houses to look the same?

Does anybody watch "Weeds"? That show cracks me up, especially the intro. I suspect alot of people that are living that life (without the selling drugs part I mean) see the show and don't understand whats funny.

I am SO glad my neighbors have a major deed restriction violation!! They have Livestock on the front 1/3 of the property! Two little mini horses, which don't bother me in the least. Sometimes they even wander over and leave me a "gift" whey they are let loose. I love them.

Especially nice to have their horsies as a "trump card" when they complain about the discreet henhouse I plan to have a few years hence.

We have a goon squad here also. Last year, they sent me hate mail telling me to remove my compost pile. None of my neighbors have complained and most didn't even know it was there. This year, the goon squad kinda looked the other way, so it seems some of the members are finally getting it. Plus, I really think they enjoyed the tomatoes I gave away. Just make sure you bury those pizza boxes deep enough.
