Help - curling leaves on new growth

I have curling leaves on new growth. It is on one of my hybrid tea roses which is about 10 years old. Has anyone seen this? Thanks.

It might be the first sign of powdery mildew--do you have a wide variation between night and day temperatures? This sort of weather often brings on PM. It first attacks new growth at the top of the plant.

The closest image I have found is of the Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV), but the symtom on my plants is not yellow or even yellowish. The curl that I see is not on mature leaves, only new growth and the immature leaves are very tight -- like, not opening or haven't yet opened) The curl might look like the TYLCV if the leaves were to mature and then turn yellow (with some imagination). Herbicide damage is out, non used on anything. Fluctuation in temperatures -- not remarkable. Over or under-watering is hard to imagine, since the garden soil is fairly loose and in raised gardens with more than a couple feet to the ground level. Before we water we put our hands in the soil to determine if watering is necessary. If anything, we might over-water to compensate for the airy/fast draining soil. Haven't seen any aphids around. Now that I've read about the virus that whitefly spread -- (TYLCV) we'll have to figure a way to keep them away. That will be another question. I hope Digdirt has the right idea. Maybe it is the "old non-harmful tomato leaf roll". That would have something to do with watering. The only thing we've added to the soil is a bloom-builder -- one time. These are plants that were started in early December and transplanted at about one foot high about a month ago. They have passed the stage when they should have been stacked or trellised -- just couldn't find the darn string! Hate to spend the gas, cause we have a big roll some darn place!

So i am assuming the grower did the herbicide damage? Cause i didn't use any? What can i do to save them? No the "grower" doesn't use herbicides. If it is herbicide damage it is from drift from someone using it near you since they were planted. You'll need to investigate that possibility. Meanwhile, a severe infestation of aphids on your plants can cause similar damage, although not to this degree, so you need to determine IF the green bugs are aphids and if so, treat for them. I also see some chewed leaves which aphids don't do so there may be some other sort of pests there too - slugs maybe. The soil is manure, mushroom tilled in. Yeah that is pretty bad looking soil. Was this fresh manure (I see clumps) or really old or composted manure? Some of your problems could easily be related to that answer. If it was fresh stuff (which is never recommended) then you could have root burn. If it was old composted stuff then the nutrients may be depleted or at least not available to the plants. The plants may need to be fed with a diluted dose of one of the liquid fertilizers. Just no way to know for sure. Bottom line, you have some severely stressed plants and 'tomato leaf roll' (a well defined condition) is a reponse of the plant to stress. But they most likely can be saved IF you nail down the causes of the stress and remove it. They can outgrow herbicide damage if all the other problems are fixed for them. Hope this helps. If you click on the picture to enlarge it you should see it better. I'll try to take better pics.
I had cut it off once before and new growth where same. It is very stiff, no bugs in it, and it is stunned.

Looks like that rose rosette virus...lots of my roses have
it now. Does anyone know of a spray that I can use.

I don't know what it IS, but it ain't powdery mildew. I know P.M. well, and that ain't it.

Valya, where do you live? Also, can you describe your rose beds and what surrounds them? Such as a high fence, lawn that is treated with week killer, how do you remove weeds from your rose beds, any wild roses near your property, etc.

Hi,
I live in Raleigh,NC, it is zone 7b, very humid,a lot of bugs and diseases.This particular bed is in a back yard next to the porch, 12 feet away from a shadow box fence. But there are pine trees behind a fence, and roses don't get morning sun up till 1p.m. Nothing grows next to theme, only lemon grass as a ground cover. I do not use weed killer, I pull them by hand, and I do not even fertilise back yard (grass ) because we have dogs. I spray roses every other weekend for bugs and disease.
This is something different, I decided to take soil test, I have not done it for e few years already. I did one thing differently to these roses this spring; I used compost tea earlier in the spring. Is it to concentrated ? But I used it on another ones, they are OK .

Possibly one of the less well known viruses. The following link mentions that an article (with color pictures) may be published in the American Rose Magazine describing the "newer" viruses.

It may be useful to see pictures of the same plant several weeks later.

I took soil test this morning. PH-5.0, N-low,Phos- med-hi,
and Pot- hi. I'll try to fix it and we'll see.
